I am going to try a myler bit-and was thinking of using a combination but there are quite a few. i was thinking of a low ported barrel narrow-as he is a tb. He is incredibly strong and just runs through the bit, has anyone had any experience, and if so of which one i should use? Thanks in advance for any help

sorry, have never tried the combination, although an endurance person I know is very happy with hers. I do have a collection of Myler comfort snaffles, and they are just amazing, so if you are looking at this mouthpiece with the nose attachment i think you will be impressed. There is the scope to have these bits on trial too.

...now the Mikmar combination..I can tell you all about that......

I have 2 mylers but neither are the combination type. I have the simple comfort mouth piece on a cheeked snaffle for dressage and a low ported comfort mouthpiece on a kimblewick for jumping where I need a bit more control. I really love these bits as my horse goes very well in them and I used to find I was always chopping and changing what I rode her in jumping as nothing seemed to work. A lot of this was schooling issues which seem to be ironing out now but she has definitely been a lot happier in the myler and I've never had to change it since I got it. The kimblewick version isn't easy to get hold of in bigger sizes - for some reason myler think only children ride ponies in kimblewicks!
I have a friend who uses the combination on one of her horses - this particular horse has problems with accepting a contact, and goes very well in the combo as it works on nose pressure first before the mouth piece comes into action. I expect the length of the shanks will affect how much nose pressure and how much mouth comes into action and when.
As far as the different mouth pieces go I think it depends on the shape of your horses mouth. My horse has quite a small mouth and so wouldn't manage a bit with a large port on it. I think it also depends on the size of the tongue - as if they've got a big tongue they might prefer a larger port. I'd speak to one of the suppliers as they are usually quite knowledgable. Also I think there is a service on mylers website where you type in your horses data and the problems you are having and they tell you the best mouthpiece/combination to use. Sorry I can't remember the address but you could google it.
Anyway seem to have rambled on a bit - hope some might be some help,
AJ

If you look up the bit bank. Gillian who runs it is a fantastic person, knows all about myler and can advise you on what bit is best for your horse and training level.

Go to the Myler site http://www.toklat.com/myler and fill in their "help" section. For awhile they were having tech problems and were slow to get back but a client of mine used it a couple of weeks ago and they replied within two days with very helpful suggestions. I've had a couple of clients use this service now, combined with a tack shop that does bit loans, and been very happy with the results.
