do/would you use when starting a young horse? Drop, flash or cavesson? Or would you wait and see how they got on and then change if neccesary? Do people use drop nosebands anymore? I've been told that flash ones are so much more fashionable+popular these days-like I care I just want whatever is best for a youngster! I'm starting my mare at the begginning of spring, so am starting to consider things like this now, any opinions welcome, thanks.

we've always just used a normal cavesson....

except with thyme...he decided he didnt like nosebands

I'd definitely try her in a cavesson first, you can then change it if necessary. I know lots of people who still use drops, flashes are more popular nowadays, but as you said, just use whatever your horse goes the best in

I di the initial bitting/long lining/lunging etc in nothing and see how it goes then move onto a cavesson or a drop at the very most.

Someone once told me about a report on the problems flashes/grakles and too tight cavessons can cause with young horses back teeth and I swore never to use one again. Western horse generally have no noseband and dont have anywhere near the same teeth problems, especially with the molars at the back, as engilish trained horses. My flashes have been binned and I either ride in no noseband or a drop on my mare who hates having a cavesson on.

As a youngster there is absolutely no reason for using a Flash or Drop. Either go with a cavesson or non.

Mine spent the best part of 12mnths with no noseband as it wasnt needed. Only as I started to ask a bit more did I introdue a noseband once he had been taught the basics of how to accept a contact.

I don't use any noseband when starting youngsters.....actually I rarely use a noseband on any of my horses.
