I am looking to get a horsebox in the next couple of weeks, only need a 3.5 tonne as have a 15.2 thoroughbred and welsh sec A, Have a budget of up to £8500 but a little cheaper would be great. Looking at a mercedes sprinter 311cdi 2.7 turbo diesel that is semi/ automatic, 02 reg 167 miles diesel engine, looks immaculate for £5995 ono, A mercedes sprinter 2.9 manual 310 lwb R reg 116 miles, looks good £6500 or a vauxhall movano 2.2tdi 51 reg,156 miles looks gorgeous for £8500, what would be cheapest to run, to maintain and generally perform better? Many thanks guys

I have no idea but why is the 02 reg so cheap?? That would make me a little suspcious. Are they all coachbuilt ones or conversions? Vauxhall Movanos they seem to do a lot of these as horse boxes and I think for that reg and price it may be a good buy. I am choosy about the door/ramphn wit openings though with these as looked at some a couple of years ago. I think the ones where the ramp is the full height of the vans with or without side loading doors are nicer than the ones with the 3/4 height ramp and then the top bit opening upwards (that seems tricky to shut).

That is my only knowledge on the subject of 3.5T ones though!

Lol!!!! They are the 2 cheaper ones i mentioned. I think i prefer the first one but wanted other peoples thoughts.

personally i like the second one, just simply because of the styling, the first one doesnt 'do it' for me but that's just purely personal preference.

I would say go and have a look and see what you think (ie see if the people are genuine etc)

I like the look of the 1997 - to me the 02 looks too shiney - and its done a LOT of miles! 4 times as much as my little car of the same age.

I ususally dont like the look of thes 'van' conversion thingys = but the 97 one looks great!

I've not looked at the ones you are looking at , but I have a Vauxhall Movano conversion. They generally have a reasonable payload - around 1100kg depending on materials used to do the conversion. I have a feeling that the Mercedes are heavier and therefore the payload not so good. However I have had a Master (same as Movano) prior to the one I have now with 155k miles on - it died and needed a new engine - I would be very wary of one with such high mileage on unless you have a full service history (or at least a decent service history) with it.

I've just looked at the Mercedes one with the salvage company - it says the carrying capacity is 1800kg - there is NO WAY that a 3.5t box will have an 1800kg payload. Personally barge and pole come to mind with that one....

Ooh, now you've put pics on I like the 2nd Merc one best two (haven't looked at the first but it seems to cheap for the reg). I like that the Merc is herringbone instead of front/rear facing, it looks smart and seems reasonably priced.
