From reading previous posts on this topic I've made a list of the recommended shampoos that I could use on my horse's tail which is pretty yellow at the end. I've tried things like Vanish OxyAction Crystal Whites but, while it makes it SO much better, it's still slightly yellow and when you hold it up to the white bits at the top of his tail there's a clear difference! I've decided against trying the Supreme Show Ring leg and body whitener powder as my horse is a dark steel grey and has lots of black in his tail as well as white and it sounded like the powder would make it all white?!

Ok the options I've come up with are:
1) Champion tails stain remover (in a tub)
2) Equine blue shampoo for white hair
3) Cowboy magic 'shine in, yellow out'
4) Horse Health Wessex 'brite whites'
5) Equinade Glo-White
6) Quicsilver

By having a choice of six I don't really want to buy all six but would rather try one first, so if anyone has used any of these and found some that have or have not worked then that would be really helpful to shorten my list!
Many thanks

I use the cowboy magic shine in yellow out and the quicsilver and found that both of them are good but not 100% at removing the yellow. I have also tried "A touch of silver" which is human shampoo for grey hair. I buy it at my local chemist and find it as effective and I only have to buy a small bottle at a time.

I always used fairy liquid on Flys tail and socks, they come up really white and a fraction of the price

Ok ok I am very sad and have used them all inc denture tablets ( not mentioned ) The one that I use is Champion tails stain remover. Its fantastic although I was a bit over zealous last week and nearly didn't the purple tinge out.

I have used cowboy magic a few times on the end of my mare's tail. It has definately got a fair bit of the yellow out but it's quite hard work.

I was my grey mare's tail in cheap shampoo (either supermarket or horse variety) and then wash the bottom again in hand wash soap flaKes. This produces a fabulously white tail and the box has lasted about 4 years, as only need a very little in 1/4 bucket of warm water.

Supreme Products do a Blue Shampoo and also do a stain removing shampoo and I think a stain spray too. I am an absolutley huge fan of their products. I used cheaper 'alternatives' when pennies are tight but they just didn't work as well, so I haven't made the same mistake again. Someone else mentioned the blue powder which i have found to be really good, all I would say is really - use the smallest amount! Get a teaspoon and then half what you really want to use because its very effective but if you use too much you do get a bluey tail - so use it sparingly!

I asked this question on HHO a little while ago and was given loads of useful tips. I can thorougly recommend washing first in washing up liquid, and then rinsing/soaking in Tesco curtain whitener! Brought our mares tail up brilliantly and is very economical
