My horse has been diagnosed with shivers and i have been told to follow a high oil diet. I am confused by which oil to feed? Some research says Soya oil, others Corn or Sunflower oil. Obviously sunflower is the cheapest and feeding up to 1 pint a day will become expensive but if this is not the best type then I would prefer to know now before i bulk buy!

Thanks in advance

i think your vet is your best source of info! soya, sunflower and veg oil are all good choices, but as a shiverer this is a neurological problem? isnt it? you could phone some of the feed help lines with qualified nutritionalist? but remember they will sell their own product!

for horse I think linseed is the best oil as it is a natural product - buy the micronised linseed.

What part of sunflower or veg oil isn't natural? Much linseed is GM anyway!

Vegetable oil is what I'd go for as at that sort of quantity it's the one least liable to put them off eating. Sunflower has a slightly stronger taste that some don't like.

Have you thought about soaking some sugar beet nuts in the oil? It might make it more tasty, as may making a breadcrumb type mix with sharps (wheatfeed) and adding that to normal feed. I sometimes add salt to the sharps and oil mix, sometimes a little weak blackcurrant cordial.
