Just looking for some opinions for a friend on which horse to buy. Last week, we went to look at some youngsters for sale, and are very interested in two - a yearling and a filly foal. Trouble is, neither of us can decide which one to buy. Friend's husband has suggested we just buy both - but I think that will be impractical with two horses already on the scene (one semi retired mare and a 7 year old gelding who competes in dressage). So, the question is, which one do we go for?
Yearling is very nice bay filly - lovely paces, nice temperament and confo. She is by Depardieu (who is by De Niro), out of a TB mare (who did race, albeit not terribly sucessfully, but seems to be well bred, although I know nothing about TB breeding and has thrown some very nice foals). Her trot was breathtaking when we saw her turned loose in the school.
Then we saw the little filly foal, who was lovely. She is by a nice young stallion who my friend tried to breed her old girl with (later found out mare had problems which meant she couldn't carry). Stallion has Ramiro Z and Krack C lines. Her dam is a Bavarian WB who was never broken, but seems like a nice sort with Japaloupe S breeding.
The problem is that we can't decide between the two. It's difficult to compare a little baby (who is still with mum, but will be weaned in the next few weeks), with what looks like an almost fully formed horse.
We're leaning towards the yearling, because she looks more like the finished picture, but the foal is lovely and looks very much like her dad at the moment (who we like a lot and were disappointed not to be able to breed with the old girl). Friend has own land, but both would probably stay at breeders for the winter.
Which one would you go for?
Oh, and G&Ts for reading all of that!
