Hi all,
Thought I'd ask this question......

We have a 14.2 heavyweight cob and have been looking for another pony as hubby has taken to riding Jack and I am on foot most of the time, also I have problems keeping Jack in line but no problem for hubby, he has already claimed him as "his" boy!!!!!!
I have been offered 2 ponies and cannot think straight

pony 1. 5yr old bay mare 14.2 lovely little thing very sweet and well mannered has been ridden and I have taken her on a hack with my boy, although she really needs "proper" schooling £1500 inc all tack

pony 2. 15yr old light cob mare 14.1 done it all! only thing she has not taken too is cross country( i'm not interested in CC either) went to see her at the weekend and she is a darling very sweet and well mannered £1200 inc all tack

I am tempted to go for no 2 as I am relativley inexperienced and am not sure how to go about the schooling for the baby...any views??????????
 
I would go for No 2 as you can just get out there and play straight away.

I am going to try out No 2 tomorrow but I think your right I have more or less decided, it was her age making me think about her!!! I know its not "old" for a pony, and I only want to hack out just now,
Some friends have advised the 5 yr old may go a bit loopy once she hits around 7yrs hormones etc and then I'd be well and truly stuck!
 
Number 2, you have to remember the number 1 horse is still a baby and needs more education. If your inexperienced, you may knock her confidence. Best to go with experience until you are ready to move onto more of a challenge :)
 
You have already decided by the sounds of things but i echo everyone elses thoughts number 2 seems the best option for you at the moment.
Maybe in years to come a younger horse might be an option, but for now i think the seen it all pony is the best

Echo - everyone else - go for No 2. Hope you enjoy your next viewing of her.

I will tell you a little story - my friend wanted a happy hacker (friend is late 40's) she just wanted to trot up the road and back. After seeing about 6 such horses which there was always something not right with, she went with her instructors idea of buying a 2 year old unbroken cob (from the instructor!) to bring on and educate in 'her way'. Well after 18 mths of just playing with the cob from the ground and paying instructor to break her in, now she can hack out - but has fallen off several times as cob is spooky and now has broken her arm. If only she had got one of the older more experienced horses she saw in the first place! I reckon her instructor is laughing all the way to the bank cos now friend cannot ride she is paying instructor to ride the cob 4 times a week!

So, yes, go with pony no 2. 15 is NOT old. a 17 yr old won Burghley this year. Many SJ ponies are in their late teens and twenties. If you are just hacking mostly you won't 'wear her out'.

I would go for number 2, 15 isnt that old and as long as you look after her properly she'll last :)
I ride a 16 year old 12.3hh pony (and im 5ft6!) and shes still full of beans! Got my first xc planned on her for a few weeks time, and i showed her last year, she wouldnt walk/trot/stand still in the champs (only a local ammature thing), she just wanted to canter and gallop and the judge couldnt belive it when i said she was 16, she thought she was 6 :o And we came 5th out of 29 in the 2ft champs :D :D so shes still going strong at 16, and shes fitter than shes ever been :D
