I'm doing some new Tobago adverts, one to go in the US/International Arab mag 'Arabian Horse World'

Which of these head-shots do you think is prettier? (Remember this is advertising to Arab breeders, mainly in the US, not Sport-Horse people!) The photos will be cropped and blown up big to show off his face, possibly with a black backgound rather than this mottly-grey one.

So, should I use this one?

Or this one?

Or as I am advertising in both the December and January issues, should I use one in each issue?

I prefere the second one as you can see his eye better, and i think alot of people take notice of a horses eye. who did your pics they're great? and he is so stunning, do you have a website as would like to pass his details onto a friend. (think they would look even more striking/dramatic on a black background)

Thanks!

I don't have a Tobago website (yet - it's under construction), but if you send me your email address I can email you some more photos plus any details you need.

The pics are by Erwin Escher - a German horse-photographer, specializes in Arabs.

I think the 2nd as well, shows off those arab nostrils! Definately more of an expression to it... ps I know Im not a breeder but I livery on a arab stud of sorts and am slowly converting! LOL

*Swoon* he is just so scrummy... I'm not sure which pics, the first shows his dish better and he looks 'prettier' but the second shows more and there's something about it thats really nice, he looks more manly and masculine in the second.

Hurry up with the H.Tobago website...oh and it had better have a H.Tobago fan club page....

I stumbled across a pic of Mark with T at Malvern last night, I though ooo thats cracking, looked again and it was your pretty boy!

Neither! the first is a better profile, but as said before not as good an expression in the eye. The second however makes him look shallow through the girth, and I know he's only young but this may put breeders off I much prefer the photo you used in the british AHS magazine.

But people won't just go by one photo when deciding to use a stallion, anyone wishing to breed from him will most likely be 'in the know' and know just how well he is doing and how highly thought of he is.

yes but if your paying a large fee for advertising you want one that shows him off to the best of his ability.
Its the same as using one that makes his legs look wonky because if people ring up you can explain its the way he's stood, it just doesn't make sense to me to put in a photo that shows any fault, no matter how minor!

I do take your point Zizz. In real life he actually isn't shallow through the girth at all (see pic below) but the 2nd pic could give that impression.

But it will be all cropped and doozied up by a designer with a black backgound and blurred edges and various bits of text - including this quote from a top international Arab judge, Liz Salmon:

"An outstanding, typey young stallion with great conformation, movement and presence, who could win anywhere in the world."

and this quote from an international champion breeder:

"Actions speak louder than words: I am breeding all my best mares to H Tobago!"

And probably another quote as well, plus his impressive show results, etc. So I think it should be OK, but I will double-check when it's done! Also, I usually try to include this little 'conformation' pic (below) in the ads as well, even though the main pic is a head-shot. Arab breeders do want pretty heads, but I like to show that he has good conformation as well!

Thanks so much for your help everyone! Very much appreciated!

I agree with Zizz - You don't want to put anything which might create the illusion of weaknesses where there aren't any. He's a super looking chap. I like the one that has been used on UK adverts - the black background looks good.

Of the two I prefer the second, the current background makes it look very 'photoshopped' and they may appear better on a black background, but personally I am always wary of any picture on a false background as a more unscrupulous person than yourself could do a bit of trimming or adding to improve appearances.
Having seen him in the flesh though I know he is every bit as gorgeous as he appears in his pictures!

I don't like this background either - but it is actually a real background, the door of a barn! The photographer wanted a relatively plain background, and the barn door in this mottled-grey colour seemed OK. But it looks wrong, I agree, so I will get them to change it for the ad.

Actually, does anyone here know how to do this? I'd love to see what it looks like with a black background. I can just about manage cropping but that's the limit of my skills!

Thanks Servern, Anastasia and zigzag!

Yes, I am very happy for him to have TB mares - and WBs and other sport horses!
smile.gif

This year he had mostly pure-bred Arabs, but also a couple of nice TB/TBxID mares, and an Austrian Warmblood.

His 2008 book is rapidly filling up - again mostly pure-bred Arabs, but some interest from TB/WB sport horse breeders as well (partly thanks to some wonderful SH breeders on here who have been recommending him

)!

But he is only 3 and not even backed yet, so I'm afraid I can't impress you with a great performance record or anything....yet!

Oh - ad update: I've just received another super quote to put in my ad, from a leading US expert/author on Arab breeding and bloodlines, the world-famous Gari Dill-Marlow! Here's what she says:

"A great breeding stallion must have a great pedigree. Tobago's bloodlines bring together a century of legends: the icing is that this blood is magnificently manifested in Tobago - no wonder so many astute breeders are using this beautiful young stallion!"

Isn't that lovely of her? She's a great lady - I would never have had the guts to go for the US/Worldwide thing without her encouragement.

I've already shown him to a few of the Arab breeders I know over here. I showed them the previous photo you had of him and I have to say I prefer that one. Good luck in trying to break into America!

Thanks Tia!

Yeah - I know, but I've used that one to death and need to make a change... I think this one will be nicer with a black background.

Eeeek - 'breaking into America' sounds a bit scary! Well, it is a bit scary tbh, and I was worried it might seem a tad pretentious or over-ambitious to do this so early in his career, but Gari and other trusted advisors have persuaded me.

Oh well, nothing ventured...
