Can you give any recommendations for cheaper, used quad bikes. It will be used for doing arena and moving sheep and hay over less than level ground. I guess a 4x4 is sensible and would like to stay under £1000. What else should I consider and any makes better or to avoid :)

Honda is the king !! but any japanese makes are good , avoid the chinesse ones poor quality and spares are a nightmare to get..

I am on my second Polaris Sport, it is a six wheeler with a trolley over the four back wheels.
Wonderful machine! It is used to remove the manure which is great as it can reverse straight to the top of the muck heap, levels the arena, goes anywhere across the fields, can carry all fencing gear in it. Feed for the horses and sheep.

Having the trolley on the back makes it so much easier than having to have a trailer to take things out and about!

We have a Suzuki quad which is fine and did have a yamaha UTV which got very old but great machine till belt got tired, swapped for a JCB workmax which is great and used everyday much warmer as has cab and put plastic doors on.but a lot more than your price limit.

Honda is best but not sure what you'll get for less than £1000. Beware of stolen ones- thieves always go for he quads and if you do get one tie a dog next to it at night time.

Great :) Think I've seen Honda big reds on ebay too - will check out prices.

Is there anything to choose between chain or shaft drive? Is one more robust than the other?

Is there any advantage to having a low ratio gearbox too. It's invaluable on the Lanny but is it any use on a quad?

If it's had a hard life what things would you look for too?

Honda parts are easy to get. Yamaha are difficult our local john deere dealership stopped stocking as they couldnt get the parts for repair. So I have Honda for this reason, I just send of to the Honda stockist and they send me the parts via courier.

I have a Honda Fourtrack - think the engine size is 400cc. We live in a very hilly area and it powers up and down effortlessley and never lets me down, but if we lived in a flatter area I think I could afford to go an engine size down.

Whether you would get one for £1000 or under, I don't know...

Good luck in your search!
