I have a new horse who is rather large. She is 16.1hh and we think she is half shire horse cross with something!!! Does anyone know which combo turnout rugs are good for these size horses? I want something that will be snuggly and warm and will come down far enough. She is very broad on her shoulders too. She lives out but will be blanket clipped so I want to know she will be warm enough! I will put another rug underneath if needed.

My shire is 18.2 and I used to put him in fal but have found the weatherbeeta with the freestyle pleats at the front are great. With them doing them in 7ft 6" its even better and they are not as expensive as fal to replace if your horse trashes them

I'll second that. I used to have Fal for my two, but bought Weatherbeeta from equestrianclearance.com for a fraction of the price and they fit really well. Mine are in mere 7ft 3in rugs

. One is a Clyde x and the other is a Russian heavy horse - so both biggies.

My horse is just a titch compared to the others mentioned, but she's very wide.
We started off using Fal and I was happy with them, came across a cheap Weatherbeeta to try out and was so impressed that all the fals have been sold and are being replaced with Weatherbeetas.

If she's broad, Rambo XL rugs are designed for the larger/wider horse.

Maybe a little more expensive, compared with some cheaper manufacturers, but the full nylon lining is great as it doesn't rub anywhere and it maintains a gorgeous shine on the coat. They also last for years. Some of my Rambos are almost 10 years old and still going strong.

I have one which sound similar to the OPs horse - mine is half Shire too. I have a WB Orican for her (it's ok, but could be deeper), and am soon going to buy her a Rambo XL after someone recommended them.

Just a word of warning - combo Weatherbeetas and normal Rambos don't actually close round my girl's neck...so make sure you can return them if you buy them.

I don't use combo rugs - I don't want to risk any of the precious mane being rubbed on my traditional who is a fairly big lad, plus mine are in at night, I have found the weatherbeeta rugs fit the old clydie and now the new girl well.

The shires range is also generous on the shoulders, wide necks and not bad on depth, hence I have bought them both shires storm breakers and highlanders for this winter. As mine are still growing I don't want to spend too much on rugs, hence the Shires ones as they are good quality but are not too bad on the pocket.

As Shils says, when I have used neck covers, often they are not wide enough to do up or are very tight on the clydesdales. If you want ever to use a fly rug, the rambo protector is the only one I have found where the neck cover is big enough - the equine premier rug was not big enough on the neck. I found the PE to have good belly depth but not enough neck width on the summer rugs and the neck covers are not generous - even on my gypsy cob who does not have that big a neck.

The clydes, Cairo was just under 16.3 and Farra is 16.2 were in 7' rugs.

Sorry going of the rugs, but thought I would ask as a few people with large horses, I am struggling to get a girth longer than 60 inchs anyone know where you can get them from??

Thanks everyone, I shall take a look at those that have been recommended. She has a shire summer sheet which is tight round her chest as she is so chunky on the shoudlers and has the chunkiest neck I have ever seen on a horse. Therefore not sure if the shires turnout rugs will fit her. I don't want her to get rubbed shouders.

16.1 isnt particularly big. fals and rambos should fit well. buy on a try or return for next size basis. different makes come upl different according to cut.
