Which rug (if any?) would you recommend?

Phil is being fully clipped this year and I have no rug with a neck. I have a 200g turnout that can have a neck attached to it, but for the price it's almost easier to buy a new rug with a neck (I cannot find the matching model neck rug to the rug I have).

OH popped out the other day and purchased a Masta turnoutmasta which is lovely but I've been reading that they're not always reliable with regards to waterproofing. I've found two other options within my price range and requirements but they're not so well known brands and I can't find so many reviews on them so wondered if you all could help me.

Masta Turnoutmasta
  • 200g Filling
  • 600d
  • Pleats and shoulder gussets
  • Already purchased, cost £80 total

Chillton Medium Weight Turnout
  • 200g Filling
  • 1200d
  • Pleats and shoulder gussets
  • Detachable Neck
  • £60 inc postage

Swish Medium Weight Turnout
  • 200g Filling
  • 1200d
  • Pleats and shoulder gussets
  • £62 inc postage

It seems to me the Chillton is best for value but as they'#re not very well know I don't know how good they are! Any opinions or other options appreciated!

I had an amigo before and really liked it but paid £70 without the neck so assumed with neck it would be closer to £90, but thank you for the links!

Is it true that higher D can improve waterproofing? He shredded his amigo which was 1200d so I guess if he's going to rip it, he'll rip it no matter what the D:rolleyes:

Amigo’s and Weatherbeata’s all the way! ….for a mid price range that is, Gallop rugs (least my light weight rain sheet) I have to say is doing very well and it was only something daft like £26.00!
Don’t like Masta’s but only because on some horses they don’t fit very well, never had a problem with them on ponies however.

I think toughness won't matter because as I said he easily shredded the 1200D rug before hand but if it's more waterproof then it's better. He won't be out overnight but I'm not planning on buying a stable rug, will just keep his T/O on probably.

I didn't know whether to try the Masta on because I've never used a combo rug on him before. Not sure if I'll need a 6'6" because of his neck so perhaps I should try it on him just to check sizing rather than buy one online and have to return it

Oh and he's a Welsh Cob, typical big neck and chest but not particularly long in the body. Although he's 6'3" length I was previously buying him 6'6" for the chest room but he's slimmer now so I think 6'3" would (should) be ok.

My mare wrecked her masta in one winter so i've just had to buy her a new one with a higher denier - to be fair there is barbed wire fencing the field that she used to lean into to say hi to other horses going down the bridleway but the lining ripped in numerous places, just didn't seem to last. There are some real bargains to be had if you shop around online - equestrian clearance have a good range of stuff. Unfortunately with my chunky monkey i'm very limited as to brands cos nothing seems to fit! But they have a lot of weatherbeetas on there, and barnstormers is a good place to find shires rugs

I've got a amigo for sale if you want it.

It's the black one with orange binding, used but only for a month or two, no rips, just a small tag Mark on the neck, could be sown up very easy.

And the detachable neck, 200g 6'6"

Luckily our main fence is post and rail but all down one side are hawthorn bushes so he'll probably snag himself. I had 6'6" for his old Amigo which was fine, I think I'm going to try the masta on him and see how the neck is because if it's a touch tight then I'll probably go for a 6'6" in whatever I buy.

DQ thank you for the link. MS how much would you be wanting?

For big necks and shoulders I think Shires are the best. My boy is a real chunky monkey and it's the only rug that fits him properly round the neck and shoulders.

I've got a Shires Highlander but haven't used it yet, seems a bit silly buying the same make and model rug in the combo version but unfortunately they don't do the matching neck :(

Daisydo, good to hear abut the Masta's, I know I can always waterproof it, I just don't want to waste OH's money, especially if he's probably going to rip it anyway lol
