I am new to the UK and need to buy a wardrobe for my 16.3hh warmblood who is coming over in January. Please can someone advise me on which and how many rugs I will need to purchase for him, i.e. turn-outs, stable, excercise, travel rugs, etc? I am unfamiliar with the weather in southern England and want him to be warm and comfy!

so as you don't go bankrupt, I would suggest buying a really good make turnout rug like a rambo or a fal that the horse can wear in the stable too. They are expensive to start with but they will last and if you think of it as a two for one, even better!!

Depending on whether hes clipped out a turnout with a neck, heavy or medium weight a good medium/ heaveyweight stable rug and a quilt / fleece for underneath. The rambo duos are a good investment for turnout because you can change the liner and the weight, so would see you through all year round.

www.equestrianclearance.co.uk have some good bargains, my horse is a WB and is wearing a weatherbeeta orica with removable neck which fits great.

Where is he coming from?

Welcome.

Seeing as no-one else has asked yet, but will be wondering, because we like to wonder, where do you hail from? We like photos too, hint, hint.

Hope you and your horse settle in your new home.

I am so thankful for your help as I had no idea whom or where to ask!
My horse is coming from Germany, and he will be clipped and stabled during the evenings out during the daytime. I will try to get photos as well!

Ditto to aboves, a decent outdoor rug, and he can always wear it in the stable as well to save on initial costs!! Whatever hes been wearing in Germany would prob be fine and if he seems cold just add a fleece!
Oh nearly forgot to say hi and welcome!!!

in which case yup a half decent rug like fal or rambo, even the combination ones then you can use it in stable in the spring and autumn if you want to. A thermatex great if you are travelling to shows, maybe a lightweight turnout in the summer for cooler damp days, summer sheet for stable in the summer months. Welcome to the uk.

Mine are on a similar system to what yours will be on, and I have a Rambo Plus which he wears all the time, in and out of the stable. He's a 17.1 Hannovarian, doesn't grow much coat, and just has a chaser clip. (I have found you need to buy one size bigger than normal with this brand)

My other horse is fully clipped out, and also lives in a Rambo Plus, but I add a Rhino lightweight wug (the one with a small bit of neck) over the top when it's very cold, like it has been the last few days. If it's goes megga cold, I will put a mediumwight over the top of the heavy weight.

In the spring/autumn I wheel out the mediumweights (Fal and a Mark Todd) and then early/late summer, then have Rhino lightweight wugs. In the height of summer, they have Rambo fly rugs, and I also have Bucas sun/shower silver rugs for those summer days when you never know what the weather is going to do. The do live out from spring- autumn, so if yours is still coming in at night, you might not need to have so many!

I have a huge number stable rugs accumulated over the years, but I never use them. The good makes of turnout rugs are so light and comfortable and breathable, I don't think there's any need for stable rugs any more.

Thermatex and fleece coolers are also essential items for travelling/competitions, drying off etc.

You'll probably need:

Turnout:
Heavyweight with neck
Medium weight
Lightweight - although not for ages

its helpful to have at least one of each of these as they get wet! you can layer with turnouts or stable rugs underneath

Stable:
Heavyweight with neck
medium weight
and a thermatex type rug - id recommend Shires thermo quilts, or Mark Todd Coolex's though!

Rugs are like shoes - you can become obsessive about them!

He's pretty big so I would be careful not to buy cheap turnout rugs that may be made from older materials and hence heavier - esp if it has a hood which is not detachable. I made that mistake last year and could not put my rug back on my 17hh horse if it was wet as it was so heavy!

I would say a thermatex type rug for cooling him off/use as a light stable rug in autumn/spring. If you are short on cash then you could buy a indoor/outdoor duel purpose rug but personally I find that they can cause rubbing if left on 24/7 and prefer to have a separate stable and outdoor rug to change with. If he's clipped probably a 300/350g for winter, a 200g weight for spring and a rain sheet for summer. However if he feels the cold he may need a 450g rug for winter, though he shouldn't in the south east. I bought 2 450g rugs for my warmblood (who feels the cold) last winter and never used them. So preferably about 6 rugs but you could get away with 1 duel purpose rug for now and get a lighter one once spring arrives.
