daughters need new stirrups and currently have peacock type. Heard some alarming stories about them recently interms of them not actually being that safe.

Quite like the look of the bendy ones (with rubber either side) but obviously safety is the main thing.

what do you all rate and why ?

many thanks

If you want the foot to release should your child fall then peacocks are the safest or you could try the Mountain Horse version. I'm slightly wary with them that a very light child might not have sufficient weight to undo the rubber tubes though.

I've seen a really nasty fall and drag with a child using the bent leg stirrups.

With No 1 Little Grey Welshie, falling off was a regular occurence and we never had a problem with the peacock variety. The critical thing is to make sure the boot has room in the stirrup and there's a gap between widest point of boot and the stirrup sides, otherwise the foot is likely to get stuck at some point. You do have to keep checking this as your child grows through the sizes of boot and get new stirrups accordingly!

I had the same problem as regularly rode my daughter's 15hh cob but didn't trust her peacock safety stirrups with my weight (over 10 stone) and didn't want to keep swapping stirrups over so we got barnes buckles which separate the stirrup from the leather if the rider gets dragged. Works on a weight/angle thing and have been excellent. You can google them or look on ebay.
