Hey guys,

I am dithering about which event to enter as my first Intro.

Am doing Dalmeny unaff ODE next weekend and Strathallan BE80 on the 2nd Aug.

Then it's either Scone on 14th Aug or Turnberry on 6th Sept.

I have schooled round Scone a while ago with refusals at just 2 fences - trak and the downhill logs to skinny, she did them both 2nd time but it is pretty meaty in general and I'm getting cold feet!

I have done lots of schooling since then and one unaff XC at 2'9 where we went clear - also had a great session at Titwood with David G. on Sunday and his opinion is that we would be fine round Scone but I think it's different in a comp rather than just schooling.
I'm sure Tara is more than capable but she does needs me to be committed too.

I can't hold off to see how Strathallen goes because Scone entries are due in now - so am thinking of waiting till Turnberry...

Also another reason to skip Scone is that I have people to come and be my B+E legal towing passenger for Strath (cheers E!) and Turnberry (cheers mum!) but have no-one for Scone so unless I pass my towing test by then I won't be going anyway

BUT I just got a bonus at work

so am going to do the course and the test as soon as that money comes through

Sorry this turned out really long

i think Turnberry is much easier than Scone but it is a long wait until Turnberry

both events are lovely the sj at Scone can be difficult if you have been around Scone xc i won't go into depth but the problem fences for intro normally are the water complex, the ditch and the footbridge but i believe you are jumping the PN level in your siggy so you shouldn't have problems there

Turnberry XC is more compact with fences coming up slightly quicker you so a loop going up the slope and then come back, from memory theres no ditches and the water is a splash through
a big bonus for Turnberry is that all parking is on hard standing so you won't have to be towed out and it went ahead last year when every other event was cancelled

i have XC pictures for the PN somewhere so PM me if you would like them to give you an idea as a few fences were the same

i would expect that Scone will take late entries too as a few other events are on that weekend too so might also be worth waiting to see how your BE80 goes although im sure you will be fine

you can wait to enter scone - they rarely ballot - and isn't the whole of friday only intro?? so you're sure to get in even if you enter after the ballot date.

but - the course for scone 2 is meant to be totally different to the spring one, apparently its now running up into the top park where the novices etc go, and therefore, although you did the spring training, it will be totally different...

turnberry is much easier IMO, but its a long way away.

i'd do strathallan - then enter scone!

I know - I might get back from Strathallan and be all keen lol

Yes I might need to get some SJ practice in as have been focusing more on XC recently - then again Dalmeny and Strath will help this too.

Tara seems to really like water jumps - we did the Pre-Nov route on the training day with no probs - it's just everything else seems huge lol!

No ditches would be good as I have rider frightener issues with them - I did the trak at Titwood about 6 times on Sunday and I'm going ditch schooling again this Sunday to try and get confidence

That is a huge bonus - although my pickup truck tows like a tractor anyway hehe

Yep Friday is solely for Intro... and I already have the day off.....

I will see how Strathallen goes and then if I feel all inspired I can fire off a Scone entry.

Thanks!

ditto others. when teaching we advise people not to do scone as 1st event but i didn't see turnberry's course so can't compare.

Yes BJW that is what I have been hearing too so thought it might be wise to wait til Turnberry but no-one I have asked in 'real life' had been there either.

I guess it all depends on the BE80 experience at Strathallan now!

Wish Gleneagles hadn't been cancelled.

Thanks xx

'Go for it' is my opinion!! If you have already schooled round Scone, there is nothing that will really frighten you second time round. A lot of the jumps are portables that might be moved around.

Unless you are desperate to keep your pony's record toally clean (ie for selling) use it as a schooling event for Turnberry, and then go and win there!!
That's what the pro's do!

There's nothing like going out and doing it!!!

Good luck whatever you decide!

BTW we took our homebred 5yr old pony to Scone (one stop at the coffin) and then to Turnberry (p'''''ing with rain and really boggy) - she did a double clear there and was placed!!

Ah wow thats brilliant - and so they should! There aren't enough Scottish events as it is (says me who hasn't even been to one yet haha)

LOL
anything under 45 will make me smile... I have been working very hard on flat but have yet to do a DR test!)

Hate to disappoint but Anna from Strathallan told me that it is very unlikely that Tullibardine will run this year to replace Gleneagles as not enough time to organise.

Also heard that the plans for Scone to take the intro and PN up to the top field will not happen as no money in the kitty to 'pipe' the stream where the bridge is next to huge Nov trekhaner so they can't get the intro and PN horses back into bottom field.

Come do Scone with me and Hopalong!
laugh.gif

If you've schooled around fine (which you did!), then at least you know you can do the fences, like someone else has said most are portables which will likely just be juggled around a little. Plus, you know your weaker fences to ride extra positively at.

(Then you'll have a month to save up to do Turnberry too...!

That's a shame on both counts.

I guess Scone spent a lot of money on groundworks up the hill towards the top field earlier in the year, so can understand them not being able to throw more money at it in the same year. Maybe next year!

Hey Mrs. I'd definitely say Turnberry as a 1st course rather than Scone. DA did T as his 1st last year & even we managed to complete it, although it was hairy! The ground holds up well to rain & parking is on hard standing which is great!
