Finding a nice Shetland pony or similar? I don't expect they will be on H&H, Horsequest or Horsemart, I am looking on Preloved and nothing quite right. I just want a nice lead rein pony, but i don't want a 2 year old, an in-foal mare or a showing star! Thought they would be two-a-penny but apparently not...

Thanks!

Shetlands can sometimes be rather wide for a child, I would have a look around for any child's pony, it is the nature of the animal and its training, plus what you want to do with it. Shetlands are natural born fence busters, but are great fun if you can give them a little job to do.

Just a thought but what about a rescue? There may possibly be something suitable, our friends got a super pair from WHW, one pony is a kids pony, out PC, county level showing etc, the other is a shetland youngster and is a cracking little pony and is due to be broken in soon. They may have something that suits. If not, search locally on message boards, in tack shops etc. Hope you find a pony to suit soon :)

Wow - thanks all! I agree that a Shetland is not necessarily the only breed that would work, but height-wise I want as tiny as poss... my son is only 2!! Might be a bit early, I know, but he adores being led around on a 13hh pony at the yard and is quite happy on board, so why not start young!

I'll try the rescue centres as well as the normal horses for sale boards, that's a really good idea.

Thanks for replies.

xx

Section A's can be good for little kids especially if you get an older one. They are easy to keep, good doers (but you have to keep an eye out for lami) and live forever.

But make sure you don't choose a grumpy one!

I'll look at those too... and anyway, Shetlands can be just as grumpy! Poor things have to put up with small children so often, I can hardly blame them... I get grumpy too! x
