Hi everyone, I have a reg ISH mare looking to breed her this year. She is 15 now and has had 4 foals with me. Her first in 2009 and her latest in 2016. I usually breed her with tb/sport horse but decided this year I would go with something different and left field. I'm stuck between a local Class 2 Irish Draught that has bred fantastic stamps of horses. I saw one of his on a local hunt and just fell in love. The second is a smashing 16.1hh golden dun cob. No breeding but is a monster of a horse with hairy legs. Her foals have all taken the colour of the sires so might be lucky and have a dun foal. She is bay. Both stud fees are the same. Would like to see people's opinions. Thanks.

That is an impossible question to ask us.

Firstly you must ask yourself, 'what do I want to achieve' - so do you want a hunter or a maxi cob ? have either stallion got sufficient progeny on the ground for you to make an informed decision as to what you might end up with. Given that breeding is a lottery even when putting the best to the best, always look 5 years on and consider what the foal will be then and decide if that is what you want.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

If you are breeding for yourself and intend to keep the foal for life, breed what you like the look of. If you are breeding to sell dont bother.

Hi AdorableAlice, I mustn't have made it clear in the question, sorry. I'm just wondering which stallion people would choose if they were in my position. I'm not asking anyone to make the decision for me! I understand what I have to consider, it's not my first day or anything. It's just a fun question for people to give their opinions on whether they prefer draughts or a more traditional type. Thanks!

If you are breeding to sell it needs to be commecial. I can't see either commanding a decent price as a youngster so you'd have to play the long game and prove its ability to do something

TheMule, I break them and sell them as 4/5 year old after they've hunted.

In that case I would put ID on ISH and breed a hunter/riding club all rounder. That should fetch you more money that cob on ISH which could be either a stunner or a moose with furry legs. I am not being rude - I have a moose with furry legs who is never going to trouble the judge.

Why is the ID stallion grade 2. Assume he's not completely correct to type or has some sort of minor conformation issue if grade 2. If it were me I'd put type to type so would choose the ID. BUT I would always choose a class 1 stallion whatever it's breed. Start with the best you can.
