Which Stallion?

Hi,

I currently live in Australia but used to live in the Uk and as both the breeds I'm looking at are more common in the UK I thought I'd ask for some advice here...

http://www.idshs.com.au/IrishDraught.html#Eireann_Cormac

This is the first stallion I'm looking at, I have been offered a lovely solid 10yr old free TB broodmare and potentially she would go to stud shortly giving me a late 2008 foal. He is $950(about 500pound) plus livery for the mare.

This is the other stallion I'm considering and a friend with a Cleveland bay x broodmare would let me put her mare to this stallion he's abit more pricey at $1200(approx. 600 pound)

I'm wanting to breed a dressage /allrounder type and love both breeds and both would give me approx 16hh and a good bit of bone and lovely temperment.

In the first scenario the Mare would be mine which means I wouldn't have to answer to anyone and if something went wrong I wouldn't feel guilty. I could also put this mare (TB) to the cleveland bay stallion but not til august so I would have to feed/worm/farrier etc for 6mths and then I'd have a surplus mare to either re-home or breed with again after she's weaned the foal.

With my friends mare I would get a foal that had a higher percentage of Cleveland bay - which would be great and I'd only have to care for/spend money on/worry about the mare while she was carrying my foal til it was weaned. But I would be constantly more worried that something would go wrong - of course I'd be concerned about my own mare but it would be like crashing someone elses car!!!

I hope that all made sense! and I'd love anyones input even if it's just which stallion you'd prefer

Thanks for reading

I'd go for the TB mare and try each stallion in turn

Which stallion is it from the Cleveland / Trakhener stud that you want to use?

Cleveland Bays seem to polarise opinions; people either love them or hate them. Those I've met have all been partbred and opinionated but kind; and quite plain horses but scopy and athletic, though you wouldn't think it just to look at them; we're so used to seeing flashy warmbloods now that with their more workmanlike action, though it does the job, CBs don't really seem to move...

Which mare do you prefer and which stallion suits which?

I like the look of Eireann Cormac - he's very similar to his father! One thing to enquire about though is if he has been presented for grading - and - if not, why not! He's pure Irish Draught, but he MAY have failed grading on either type - or on veterinary grounds. Of course it may just be that there hasn't been a grading available -

- but not sure if a foal by him would be eligible for grading as an Irish Sport horse. In this country it would only be eligible for Grade 3. That may not matter to you but it seems a fairly hefty stud fee for an ungraded horse. A$950 is about £435 - and you'd get a good RID stallion for that here. Mind you, looking at RID stallions in Oz they do seem to be rather more expensive - rarity value, presumably!

The Irish Draught stallions foals are eligible to be registered as Irish sport horses and yes they are a fairly new/rare breed in Australia, nearly every horse here is TB.

I am looking into buying a foal or I could buy a mare in foal to Eireann Cormac for $2500, I'm just keeping my options open at this stage. But I would love to at least once in my life to go through the process of breeding my own horse, I can't imagine anything more rewarding. And I'm in the position to do it .

The Cleveland bay stallion I'm looking at is Braelea Park Fearless(sorry thought that was in the link)

I'm still completely torn as to what to do as they seem to each have similar pro con lists - Aaaaarggghhh!

Sorry, but that DID make me laugh. I am Australian - and there are 10's of thousands (or more!) of NON-TB horses in Oz! Virtually every breed in the world has a stud book in Oz; I left in 1980 but even then I was regularly riding an American Saddlebred, a Quarter Horse, a Clydesdale cross, and a part-bred Arab. Lippizaners arrived in Oz before then as did Fresians. Arabs arrived on the First Fleet - as did Timor ponies and - with the TB - formed the basis of the Australian Stock horse.

And ponies - hell - every breed you'll find in England is in Oz.

Yes, of course your right! I didn't word that very well did I.

What I meant was Irish Draught and Cleveland Bay stallions are - comparitively - few and far between. and although there are more of these breeds and crosses coming through they are still outnumbered by the TB's, which are relatively cheap to buy and do make good allrounders.

They are also quite difficult to find as they tend to get snapped up pretty quickly! Nearly every foal/yearling I've enquired about has already been sold, which is why I'd like to breed my own.
