I was wondering if anyone would help me choose a stallion for my mare? I'm new to the breeding thing and have explained why I am going down the foaling route in my other post!!! I've done work experience on a couple of studs so I would like to think I am fairly experienced! I want to breed a really good HW show cob out of my HW mare...I cannot for the life of me work out how to get piccys on here!! ( i am a newbie!) so was wondering if anyone out there could help me choose one!? thanks xx

She looks really nice! Are you sure she is a heavyweight? Have you shown her in heavyweight showcob classes? I would use an ID or maybe a small CB on her, I'ts really difficult to breed a true show-cob. Least they do the maxi-cob classes now if cob's get too big. I would go for a small ID stallion, wouldn't use a welsh because you dont want to see the knee action that welshies can have in a show-cob

eventer28 - ive been told she is a hw when i took her to a lynn russell showing day at frogpool manor a couple of years ago!! she liked her and said she was heavyweight :S lol im open to suggestions!!! lol i was thinking about a cb stallion!! i will be researching after dinner

Try Bridgeford Ferryman RID He is at Greylands Stud. Or have a look at Solider of fortune RID at Landmark Stud.

I like him too. However, have you had a look at Skip and Sea? I was going to use him this year but decided to give my young mare another year. He's 15.3, 9.5 bone and a chunky sort if you like greys.
 
I found Trevalyn last night for you and wanted to post a link but HHO went to sleep on me so couldn't, so yes I think him!

if you are wanting a coloured cob isant country marksman being advertised as a show cob producer you might try there.
 
Use a breeding vet. Or send your mare to a stud, Groomsbridge are in Essex (or nearly) and I sent my mare there. Sally is great and she was very well looked after. The package covers all your scans so worked out no more expensive for me than having the vet to do it at home.
Somewhere you can get a list of AI 'specialist' vets, it might be the BEVA site. I know House and Jackson are as they are my vets normally.
Ask to see any progeny, its what the stallion throws that matters, its more important than him (almost!). Other people who know far more about it than me wil lbe along with suggestions. Oh and take a good side and front confo shot of your mare.

xx bear in mind shes been out of work for about 2 yrs due to lameness and has only just come back into work recently so not very well muscled as of yet!!!! xx
 
I was thinking to take to look at the stallion, so you could compare her weak points with his pluses.
She does look grumpy!!

I have recently, after visiting several mares that i have liked in pics, found that it is so hard to get a good overall impression conveyed in photos but......... from the pics I would say that the stallion needs a slightly better front end, a bit more length of rein and to add a bit more quality without loosing the bone. A nice type to start from though and you could do a lot worse.

I think that as she has a good amount of bone herself that you could possibly settle for slightly less in the stallion (Trevelyan) aslong as it can add the little quality needed. My opinion only!!!

When you go to look at a stallion - you LOOK! You look at his conformation and type and see whether it complements your mare's conformation. You look at how he is handled and how 'easy' he is - stallions should NOT be raging lions - they should be well-mannered!! You ask if he has any foals/youngstock you can see (HT is a young, newly graded stallion so might not have any.)

As to AI - almost any vet CAN do it - doing it is easy. It's getting a good result that requires an experienced repro vet!! Timing is EVERYTHING - you need a vet who can scan your mare, and determine exactly when you need semen - a day too early - or worse - a day too late - and you have to start again. For anyone who has only one mare, it almost always works out cheaper to send her to the stud - or a good AI centre. AI will usually require at LEAST 3-4 scans per cycle. Setting up and taking down takes time - and you'll pay the lot; visit fees add up. If you don't have stocks, your vet may need to sedate your mare to scan - that costs more!

A client of mine decided to try to AI from home - 3 cycles later it's cost them FAR more than they 'saved' in livery fees here - and mare is not in foal!
