I'm just interested to know really!
Which supplements do horses really need?
I have a cob mare who lives out and is only fed forage as she is not working at the moment, she is also barefoot.
As there is such a vast array on the market i am interested to know who feeds what and why please?
Thanks

My horses have good quality high fibre haylage, and small feeds of safe and sound chaff and hig fibre cubes. All I add to their feed is half the recommended dose of Kossolian blood salts. I have found this the best supplement to support my horses needs. ps I love the smell of it too!

2 in work and 1 filly on a low calorie balancer. 1 of these also has global herbs immuplus Ive tried taking him off it but he needs it. 1 field ornament gets top spec all in one vit&min supplement. The boys also have access to a red rock salt lick block in their stables as I find it prevents them licking and chewing their doors after eating their dinners! they lick the salt lick instead :).

micronised linseed is good, did use garlic but stopped after hearing mixed reports and was sick of his stable smelling like a curry house on a friday night.

Just a Spillers vitamin and mineral supplement. He is a native pony so lives on fresh air and just gets hi-fi light and high fibre nuts at very limited rations!

My barefoot neddy gets:

Copper and Zinc
Biotin
Joint supplement
Cinnamon
Devils claw (but not all the time)
All mixed in with fast fibre

i've had our forage analysed so dont need to give any extra minerals. I feed a joint supplement because she has a clicking leg and i believe prevention is better than cure i.e athritis

I own a good-doer cob who is living out.

Currently, I'm feeding him NAF Oilovite to make sure he's getting all of his vitamins and minerals, along with keeping his coat shiny :p

In the summer I give him NAF Respirator too, as he has breathing difficulties.

It depends on which horse and what part of the year.

Over the 12 months I will use, Garlic, Pink Powders, Magnesium and Propell Plus.

I also will use a liver Tonic twice a year and after worming.

I think that supplements have there place if used correctly.

Mine are getting pro hoof as its got the least amount of fillers and binders in it and the highest % of actual ingredients.

You couldnt pay me to waste money on NAF (the clue is in the name!) or any other big labels as the vast majority is complete crap.

Next year il be getting my hay analysed and feeding only what is required - makes so much more sense!

I wouldnt really call linseed a supplement, which is why i didnt say I use it cos mine does get it but its more a feed to me.

Linseed is high in naturally occurring omegas (what we get from oily fish our mums are always telling us to eat!) it is a great way of putting on weight without having to feed massive quantities (bad for trickle grazers tums) it gives coat and skin a brilliant boost, is good for feet and just about anything else too!

I feed my 23 year old cob mare who is still in full work pink powder (senior), a splash of cod liver oil, joint formular and has access to a good mineral/salt lick. Only just recently started to feed pink powder senior and must be honest she is looking and feeling fab on it.

I am just about to switch my 21 year old from straight glucosamine to riaflex (she has spavins). She also gets cider apple vinegar and linseed oil which I believe are both supposed to be good for the hooves and joints. She is on farrier's formula at the moment - normally on blue chip lami lite and only on FF as the feed shop didn't have any blue chip and the ingredients are pretty much the same.
I would love to still have her on myoplast as it's rather brilliant - insurance paid for it for a few months after her surgery last year, but at £75 a month there is no way I can afford it and it's probably better I spend my money on lessons.
