Well my mare gets some speedibeet and micronised barley (on vets advice) with biotin for her feet. Her feet are the best they have ever been since I have owned her but not sure if its due to her having had biotin for 8 months or its the change to speedibeet and barley but something has worked.

i found my horse was foot sore on barley so would think its the biotin. horses hooves take so long to grow out that 8months sounds about right for you to be seeing a substantial affect.

I do not consider vets to be a good source of feeding advice, but then, I have been feeding for 50 years, I do not ask them for advice, and if they are wise, they do not offer it!
Speedibeet is a good fibre, useful for horses who cannot take cereal, and who are good do-ers.
Barley is a cereal useful for horse which need to keep condition on.
Biotin is a B group vitamin, thought to be beneficial for hoof growth.
Your vet has given you good advice, it can't be wrong, poor do-ers willl fatten up and good do-ers will slim down, brilliant!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ho ho ho.
I suggest you feed a forage/fibre diet plus minerals and micronised linseed meal.
Have a look at the barefoot diets on here, and after a few months, cut out the shoes.

My horse is a 'happy hacker type' and he has chaff with a multi vit (Dengie). He also has soya oil as his coat became quite scurfy.

After several bad experiences over the years with a range of supplements, we have decided to keep them to a minimum - and to try to always feed only things which horses could access naturally.
Seaweed - 4 horses dangerous to lead simultaneously, vet suggested moulds in the seaweed.
Glucosamine - ID hypersensitive to noise
NAF Haylage Balancer/PinkPowder - 3 horses anxious, itchy, generally unsettled.
Devils' Claw - ex-broodmare bleeding excessively when in season, (can cause spontaneous abortion)

ATM, 2 get wheatgerm for their hooves, 1 has Global Herbs' 'Airways Plus' and retired cob still gets Equimins' Flexijoint because she does well on it and at 30 yrs old is still flexible in all her legs.

you've already said on another thread that the seaweed was unbranded so can you be sure it was in date and that it was definitely seaweed?
If i bought seaweed that caused that sort of reaction and that was the vets suggestion i'd want it tested and would be in communication with the manufacturer. I do admit i have problems with NAF seaweed - all other seaweeds have given no reaction though.
