I have read some previous posts on this subject but just wondered what current thinking is. I have read that rubber toppings are not so popular now as the run off might in the future be classed as toxic waste! What are your recommendations for topping my 40 x 20m menage? The menage will be used by 2 horses for schooling and lungeing.
Thanks

if you can get permission for rubber topping, id always go for that, with the best drainage you can afford.

mine had top quality drainage and membrane, ok sand, nice thick rubber topping and its perfect, doesnt get deep and has never frozen-even in all that snow last year i was able to ride as it was fine under the layer of snow.

When you say top quality drainage, what does this mean? How do you tell the differance between top quality and basic?

Also, who did you have to build yours? Hope you don't mind me asking.

Don't cut corners with the drainage. I.e. spend the money on proper drainage channels and a 75-40mm Carboniferous Limestone base. The sub-base and drainage system are the most important parts of the arena. If you dont bother with it you may aswell not bother at all as no matter how much money you spend on the surface you will have problems. You wouldn't build a house without foundations so don't do it with an arena :)
