i'm going to admit to a complete lack of knowledge about sweat rugs but i need to get something for P, they seem to vary massively in price and i'm not clear on the difference between them and coolers, just want something simple that does the job. thanks guys!

For winter, after a training session, you want them to dry off before putting on their winter rugs for the nighttime...I used Masta fleece rugs on my boy, they look really smart, they wash well, and will last for 3+ years (I still have the two that I bought 4 years ago and they have been in regular use)... they're on sale too... £20.99 http://www.robinsonsequestrian.com/brands/masta/masta-wembley-show-rug.html - they're made from a "suede fleece". I have a normal sheet, and I have one with a neck. They're also great in winter, if you need an extra layer under a stable rug.

I the summer, I use a mesh type cooler - after wash downs, and after training...weatherbeeta make a nice one.

It depends on how warm you want it to be, Thermatex really cannot be beaten but are not light so best on a clipped horse for use when it is cold, the rug I find myself using most is a combination of fleece and mesh an ideal weight for summer but used in winter on any that are only partly clipped, link below to the one I have.

Just noticed they only have small sizes so an alternative which is much the same.

If I remember correctly you are abroad? that may limit you to choices I guess

Premier Equine have a 40% off sale finishing early tomorrow I think, their Premtex cooler is like the Thermatex ones and they have a few other types of cooler too, they deliver to mainland Europe

thanks people! P is not clipped and is not mega hairy as he's spanish, sort of fluffy! but he does get really sweaty after a hack and it's getting cold now here( you are correct WD , i am in France, crippling postage costs, except equestrian. com)
so if i am getting this right i can use one that says fleece travel rug from eq.com?
or,as he's not clipped can i use the combination then?
sorry for being a thicky!

I personally dont like fleece rugs. For coolers in the winter I have a Mark Todd Coolex (similar to Thermatex but a bit cheaper) and a cheaper really good rug is Saracen waffle cooler. Much prefer waffle coolers to fleece. I think Weatherbeeta do one as well.

I would go for the combo as he is not clipped you will get more use out of it as they cool quickly but their backs stay warm meaning you can use it in fairly warm weather with less risk of them over heating, everyone has different preferences I really don't like waffle coolers.

I have an Amigo cooler, which I find really good. Before I clipped him, I'd put that on with a fleece over it and he'd drive pretty quickly. Now he's clipped I don't bother with the fleece!

I have an amigo mio cooler for the summer after sweating and washing. In the winter I use a weatherbeeta waffle cooled when he's clipped. I wouldn't want a thicker cooler on him in the winter even though he's clipped as he's a very warm horse. Both are great, I personally wouldn't use a fleece as I don't find them very breathable.

I have comfort zones and thermatexs for the coldest weather .
I use premier equine fleeces for medium warmth ,
I use the summer weight thermatexs in warmer weathers and on unclipped horses .
