Now I'm getting used to driving my 4x4 I'm trying to decide what trailer to get, and have confuzzled myself!
I'd originally thought I'd need a 510-size to fit in Chloe (shire x) but since she's going to be rehomed, I only need to worry about Megan, and she can easily fit in a 505 or Bateson deuville-type trailer.
I've tried her in both of these, and she travels fine, but I haven't towed either, so not sure which is better from that respect.

What trailers do you really rate, and why?

Also, is it better to get a new, or a 2nd hand one, since prices don't seem that different

I've got a budget of around 3k to spend

Thanks

I know round here there is not much difference in price betwen a new 505 and one a couple of years old so might be worthwhile buying a new one as you know you won't have any problems.

I have a 510 and it tows on my Discovery very well

I've just got a 2003XL (Cheval Liberte), brand new and it's LOVELY. Nice and light inside and very roomy. They're £3650 I think in most places. Seems to tow nicely. Batesons are lovely though! Batesons and CLs have good suspension so the horse gets a smoother ride.

I'd buy new rather than 2nd hand - just a few pounds more will get you a new one without dodgy history and you know the floor is ok as it's new etc.

Happy trailer searching!!

I have the 510 and love it. It tows very well with my discovery and can comfortably fit my friends 17hh gelding. Like the others I would buy new if you can, you know what your getting!

I've just done a bit of research on this as I wanted to get a new trailer for my 16hh horse who doesn't travel too well. The main difference between Ifors and Bateson's is the suspension. Ifor's have leaf spring, so can be a bit bouncy (think old land rovers as that's what they have) wheras Bateson's have independant suspensions so each wheel has a coil, so the horse travels better and the trailer tows better. The other thing to look at is the empty weights, the Ifor 510 weighs over 1000kg empty but the Bateson is 860kg, so worth saving. Price wise new I think they are very similar, around £3k + VAT but (top tip here...) if you buy direct from Bateson themselves (near Stockport) you get a 7.5% discount, well worth having. I got mine 2 weeks ago and I ordered it and picked it up all made for me, 9 days after. Really brill service. You don't need to go to order just ring up and pay for it when you collect. (no i don't work for them, but I should be on commission shouldn't I?!!

Hope this helps!

I have an almost brand new Bateson Ascot if you could find a few more pennies! (complete with full width bars)

I can't justify the extra expense to my OH. Did try though, told him it was worth more because the donkey had graced it with her presence, but he was having none of it

Whilst I only have the little Bateson Derby, I can say it is a lovely little trailer, tows very well and I am very pleased with it. Have noticed that the Batesons also don't seem to be such thief magnets.

Recently removed the partition as Chancer is now too chunky to fit and purchased the rear bar - got it within a couple of days from Batesons and they were really helpful when ordering it.

I believe the Bateson Deauville is one of the best trailers around. They are well made, reasonably lightweight, tow beautifully, carry up to two 17h horses & retain their value extremely well. They don't squeek, rattle etc like Ivors do & they have external tie rings which Ivors for some reason don't have.

I'm a Rice fan, I like the way that the front ramp is on the left hand side, so, if god forbid you needed to unload on a motorway, you do so onto the hard shoulder. Also, robust and tow's nicely, mines a B60.

I'm definitely leaning towards getting a new bateson deauville

Especially as I can go directly to the factory and get a bit of a discount

I hadn't realised ifors didn't have tie rings, but thinking about it you're right - I've always tied up to the ramp fastenings

Love my Rice, it's 10+ years old and still going strong cos tme about £500 to maintain over that time including a new floor.

Love the fact hte ramp is on the off side so you have more room to turn and unload the heaviest or only horse you travel.

Although if I have the money and was shopping now I might look at one of the Equitreks perhaps as staying away may be looming on the horison for me.
