Hi there,

I am new to the forum, so i don't really know how to do this!!!

I have a 3 yr old French Trotter (TB type) and i have been advised by my instructor to use either a chambon or bungee reins to lower his VERY high head carriage. However, by other qualified people a market harborough has been suggested, but my current instructor does think its a good idea. From looking at the different training aids, I personally prefer the market harborough ... but what do you think i should do?

Thanks in advance!

The best training aid from my point of view is time and patience. Check that the saddle, bit, riders hands and teeth are ok because they can all cause a high head carriage. Then schooling!

Your horse is only young and so will be years off being balanced and well muscled. Strapping his head down is a short cut that may cause physical damage.

Use a chambon. This means you have to put time and effort into lungeing your horse and build up the back muscles.

The market harborough does not produce a good outline and really at 3 you would be better off putting the time into lungeing and training them from the ground. Rather than pulling the head in when ridden.

Building up the back muscles, learning verbal commands and basic lunge skill is essential to every 3 year olds training, but is often sadly overlooked

Thanks for your advice ... when i had my first lesson, i thought he was to young to go in an outline, so i do see where your coming from, and i share your views. But my RI says that he should have something... and being 16 i didn't think it best to argue with him on the spot!

He has had his teeth checked and has got a new saddle, so we shall see how we get on! Thanks again!
