so im thinking of going treeless, Taz is just an absolute pain in the backside to fit a saddle to and he has a majorly short back and i am having to get the saddler out once a month so change his saddle because he just changes all the time and i cant afford it

i would try one on him to see if it would fit as he is an odd shape but i dont know anyone with one and there are so many different types out there which one to i choose?

I have a barefoot london for my short backed NF x.
He is three so just starting to gently back etc.
There are so many different makes. I did alot of research before I went for the London but the next person may hate the London / barefoot.
As long as you buy a reputable saddle with the correct pad then you can't go wrong - you could always sell it on if it doesn't suit you. Don't touch the indian rubbish (on ebay) with a barge pole! Here is a pic of Dex modelling his if you're interested:

awh hes cute :o i was looking on ebay and i saw quite a few that looked like an ordinary saddle, i dont know if they work that well, my horse is 17.2hh and he can only take a 16.5 inch or an undercut 17 inch :/ so i take it they just mould to the horse? you dont have to have them fitted or anything?

This is taken from horse and harmony website re: sizing, who sell barefoot saddles:

Please note: The lenght of the saddle (A) is the overall length. As there is no pressure at all in the rear part, the horse can move freely. Even if the saddle looks a little too long on your horse, choose the size according to your measurements. It is very important that the saddle fits the rider well, so he has enough space between thighs and pommel and does not sit on the pommel or cantle, which would limit the saddles adaptability. The horse's back is free of any pressure at the rear - the Barefoot can even be lifted slightly at the cantle with a rider on board.

What dress size are you? I'm a 8-10 so I have a size 1 saddle (to give you an idea of length)

Hi , I have a Heather Moffatt treeless , a Torsion and a WOW saddle .... love them . I wouldnt go back to a treed saddle . Its very much like riding bareback so you do need to feel confident and comfy riding bareback in yourself and your horse . I think Torsion you can try before you buy , I know if anyone asks me Im happy to bring my saddles to them and let them try them , you know as soon as you sit on it if its for you or not . I find you tend to do things slower , you trot that little bit slower , you think ahead before tight turns ! Not a bad thing !
Ask around locally , Im sure someone will have one that you can at least have a look at one . Downside... girth straps seem a tad wider than regular straps , so alot of treeless company's will try to sell you their girth .... Ive found all regular girths are fine , esp once you've used the girth straps afew times and they've softened up abit . Stirrup bars are sometimes a D ring rather than a bar , in which case if they are Dring think about safety stirrups or cages on your stirrups . Also treeless can be longer along the spine ( but only in regards to a numnah or square ) again the treeless co. will try to sell you their pads ( very expensive ) its up to you , I have the treeless pads and made to measure Polypads ( they do make them for you , just let them have your sizes you want ) also Nuu-med will make them as well. But they are great.

I may be wrong (please correct me if I am) but I was always under the impression that WOW saddles were treed?

I really like the look of the ghost saddles, I have only heard good things about them. I don't have one, but if I needed a new saddle I would certainly look into getting one of these.

oohhh i see, im perfectly fine with riding bareback and dont mind the feeling on it, i have been schooling and jumping taz recently due to his saddle not fitting again :o

i am only a size 8-10 so it not that i just have to be aware that he has a shorter back then a 14.2hh...hes 17.2hh so people tend to presume he can take up to an 18 inch saddle when he cant actuelly take much more then a 16.5 :/ pain in the bum, well i will keep looking, i just dont want to spend £800 and find out that it doesnt fit because his withers are too high or that it bridges, i have had enough of that already with treed saddles -.-
