I give mine the usual carrots and apples and also pears and parsnips. He hates turnip and swede.

Just wondering if anyone gives their horse anything else as I'm not sure what else to try?

Thanks :)

Apples, pears, grapes, strawberries, blackberries, satsumas, mandarins, pineapple, watermelon, banana, parsnips, carrots, apricots, plums, peaches, broccoli, cauliflower. He doesn't get a lot of the more exotic stuff, only if it is looking a bit overdone. Obviously take out the stones of apricots and stuff.

He loves a bit of variety.:D

thanks for the suggestions, I didn't realise they would like more citrus type fruits, do you peel the satsumas and feed them segment by segment?

My Dartmoor cross liked onions, she'd raid the compost heap for the skins, also bananas, potatoes and anything else she found, including used teabags

My TB has no idea what to do with an apple and isn't keen on polo mints :o

some do some don't yes by segment

mine likes
Apples, carrots, pears (favourite), grapes, strawberries, blackberries, satsumas, mandarins, pineapple, banana, parsnips, carrots, apricots, plums, peaches, cauliflower, turnips, swede.

I peel the satsumas and mandarins and put them in his hay in segments so he has to find them. It's less messy to give them in segments if you are feeding by hand.

My mare likes carrots and apples, also loves swedes - I put one in her stable to kick about or hang it up on a string, she loves them! She'd probably eat others if I gave her them, but she doesn't get fruit/veg often cause she goes a bit hyper. She likes stealing fruit cake though - as my mum discovered on Boxing Day :D

Someone said their horse liked potatoes? I thought horses couldn't eat potatoes cause they made them ill or something or is that just me being dumb?

I heard the same about potato skins

Nearly any fruit that is about to go off ( i hate bananas once they start going black, the tb thinks this is when they are at their best.
Peaches he eats the flesh, scrapes what he can off the stone and then spits it back at me.

Oranges I give him a whole one and stand well back as he squishes it till it pops then sucks the juice out.

Vegs I'll give him any root veg, plus he loves celery. He also liked fennel but I ended up with that by accident as I hate anything that tastes of aniseed and don't buy it.

I'll also give him nuts if I am eating them, he was very impressed with Brazil nuts.

flipping heck he eats better than I do :D

My old mare used to love having an orange. She would grab it with her teeth, shake it to peel it then eat it!

The boy we have now will eat absolutely anything!!

My section A mare and coloured cobblet gelding, are fussy. She wont eat pears, but he will, but only certain types. They love carrots and red apples.
Won't eat soggy fruit of any sort.Nor will they eat stalks. He doesnt care for swedes much. He Prefers Extra strong mints over polos. She likes polos. lol Theyre PICKY!!!!
I REFUSE to feed bread,cabbage,peelings.
Not tried bananas (yuk cant stand them ewwwww).

Well with the fruit and veg I'll have lots of good intentions and buy it but not use it. So a big bunch of celery, I'll only use one or two sticks in salads and there it sits in my fridge till it goes to the yard.
At least I don't have to feel guilty about throwing things away.

I was wondering the same about cabbage. Somebody offered us some to feed to the horses but we weren't sure if they could eat them. Would they even like them? Horses have more of a sweet tooth don't they? Raw cabbage is quite bitter

Shetland: sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower and pineapple!
Welsh: nothing! He's a snob when it comes veg and fruit.

Agreed, my welsh eats only the BEST carrots and apples if they are cut into peices!! Tried swede, parsnip, cabage, brocoli and a sprout stalk,......having non of it! Wont even eat mints!

......carrot flavoured crunchies are another matter all together!!

:)my nan used to cook sunday dinner everyweek for 10 of us she would bag all the peelings and pop them in a bag most of the time it would be carrot coliflower brocoli swede parsnips and cabbage. he loved it the goody bag would last 2 or 3 days when mixed in with his feed. he had this every week for years. saadly he got an infection on his heart and had to be pts.
