I've just replaced my Ifor Williams HB510 with a new HB511 and thinking about updating my towing vehicle... I'm interested in what people find as the best vehicle for towing a trailer with at least one 16:3hh horse. I have my B+E liscence and have been towing for 15 years... I would want something that would mainly be for carting the family around, definitely 4x4 (or selective 4x4) as I live in a remote area that if it snows or is icy you're stuck without it, but good for towing...

I have two 16.2hh Horse, We tow with our Mitsibushi L200. We have just upgraded from the older model to new newer rounded shape. The new one is not a bad family vehicle either, pretty much car like inside & with a canopy you still have a boot. We find its perfect for Family life with dogs & horses :D

I currently tow with an xc90 which I love for everyday and is fine for towing, just wondering whether to upgrade for a slighty newer version ( mine is 10yo) or try something different... I did have a Nissan Pathfinder which towed fine but was awful for fuel consumption, general interior was poor quality and the ride was boat like!! ( not to mention the extortionate road tax!) x

We did look at the newer xc90 actually but chose to stick with what we know & love. Fuel consumption on an L200 isn't too bad with the 07 we get around 450 miles to a tank (I'll say £60 but we buy on a fuel card excl.VAT). Must admit though the road tax is something I don't like..!! x

I love my SWB shogun. Use it every day for my drive to work and on longer distances, when I have to, in 2WD and get almost 30mpg. Tows really well (511 and a 15.3 and 14.3 with no problem at all) but it's my first horse trailer towing vehicle so can't compare. Not the biggest back seats and boot but it's a 2door. I did not want or need anything bigger (only 20cms longer than my old mk4 golf!) The LWB is 4 door and 7 seats and much longer.
It's a 2010 so the newer engine so tax is only £285 a year

To me you can't beat a land rover Range Rover, defender or Disco (but avoid mk1s as they need regular maintenance). We have a isuzu trooper thats fantastic in snow & is used for towing alot its so smooth & economical that you don't think you are towing thus my petrol gobbling range rover gets sidelined from that job & gets more use in snow helping people get their vehciles unstuck when we do get any white stuff. If l lived in a remote area if money wasnt an object you cant beat an unblinged range rover with a good set of tyres not these silly big alloys & thin tyres they put on for show.

Defender, a 110 if you need to cart the family round. 7 seats (9 if an older model), plenty of bootspace, a brilliant tow car and the best performing 4x4 in tough conditions....as long as you don't need it to do lots of miles as it's not the most comfy!

Range Rover, effortless towing. I have the 4.4 V8 and you wouldn't know you had something weighing 2 tonne behind you!

If I didn't have that I would consider a Touareg (if it can tow an aeroplane then it can tow a horse!) but obviously the right engine or would consider the Discovery.

love the ford ranger, the older thunders are quite nice inside too. weve had two thunders and currently have a wildtrak, its amazing and you cant go wrong with a 3.5 towing limit.
