Which way next - iideas please

Ooh how about a friesian? I don't have much experience with the breed but the one I knew had a lovely temperament, movement, and looked after her middle aged novice owner really well, she was such a sweetheart

Go for a heavy...I adore Clydies...my boy was one in a million. My friend has a fab Breton mare.
If I ever decide to get another heavy Im very taken with Ardennes :) But you cant beat a good Clydesdale ♥♥♥♥

I like the no white on Cleveland Bays. I've heard they can be stubborn????

I used to ride one for a friend. If she had spent as much effort jumping as she did in avoiding jumping she would have been fab. Could turn on a sixpence (right in front of the fence) and had plenty of scope as we would quiet frequently jump the wing as we argued over which way to go! Other than that she was a lovely horse!

May I ask what your point is? ETA, I don't mean that to be short but I don't know how else to ask the question :)

Definitely not an Ardennes, not even close :) I'm quite happy to discuss online if you are?

I'm not quite sure what you want to discuss, but when I said, that it said in the link that the breed "only has 4 lines", I presumed that it meant only 4 stallion lines, which to me sounds like a narrow breeding base for a breed with more than 1 breed involved in its origin? (I hope that makes sense to anyone else than myself :redface3:, it makes sense in my head.)

On Wikipedia it also says that the breed's origin includes "Suffolk Punch, Clydesdale and Shire horse. Some Ardennes and Percheron were also used." But it wouldn't be the first time that I heard about something not being accurate on Wikipedia, so if you say that you don't think any Ardennes was used, I'll take your word for it.

Anyhow, there is a Swedish Ardennes horse too, many of them looks, to me, quite similar to your OH's horse. Some photos that I found through Google image search:

Sorry FL, I took your comments totally out of context (embarrassed). Please forgive, I've nothing to blame but my own idiocy. Just out of interest anyway, the link you posted earlier in the thread with the picture of the VHD grazing is actually the same horse that I was riding in my earlier pics and submitted by my husband. He was a grand horse, and I'm sure there was someone on HHO who also had one, but you don't see many of them around!

Funny my mare's last owner had that idea too, in my experience they are sharp, athletic and nothing is little about their attitude. Its taken me a year to sort my mare out :)

Yes but that's because your mare is a Doc O'lena mare as I recall? That's a hard-core, very sharp bloodline. If she were to go for a more gentle bloodline then they are fabulous. I do own some Doc O'Lena horses and I love them, so I'm not dissing the bloodline, but they are much more keen than many of the other AQHA lines :smile3:

OP I second considering an AQHA.

If the too tall ones are going to be a bit much for you in your dotage :p :D I can throughly recomend and Appy. If I recall CP we are much of an age, my latest is a 3 year old part bred Appy (has welsh D and some TB in there) They are lovely creatures, with lots of erm personality :D

Don't be embarrassed

, there is nothing to forgive, I only became a little confused :). But what a small world, I did a search on Ask Jeeves for Vladimir Heavy Draft and that was the one of the first suggested links, I wonder what the odds are for that it would be a page with a photo of the same horse?!

LOL Some great ideas here! As I got older the height of ponies got smaller - but they retained their 'energy' 'intelligence' and 'athleticism'!! My Arabians that I ride now are 13.3hh and14.1hh....and we are having a ball!!! And I still need a rock or log to mount them!!!

I tried that ,an Irish daft ,somthing I could potter about on in my declining years. The trouble was that he brought forward my "declining years" rather dramaticly because he dreamed of Badminton rather than pottering about.:eek::eek:

:D. Sorry about your injuries Mike, but that was very witty :)

I had an Arab as my first horse. Incredibly intelligent.

I'm off to find out what a Holstein is.

I love the Ardennes, smaller and black feather.

I've always fancied a leopard spot or really well marked blanket Appaloosa YG, you're spot on there (I wrote that before I realised, but I'm going to leave it :D)

Why go for a certain breed? Why not look at a horse as its all round personal character. We gave had amazing tbs and not even thought about the breed. Safe for novices to ride. It's about the all round picture and temperament. You never know something might just surprise you that you have been blinked by concentrating on a breed type.

Because breeds have particular characteristics that I'm interested in. I've owned dozens of horses, many tb amongst them, and I like new experiences. I am especially interested in strong markings, to brighten up the yard as I have two dark boys at the moment, and very active movement.

I've actually realised through reading everyone's ideas that if someone offered me an over height 2 or 3 year old Welsh D in bright bay with four white legs, I would be very interested. Ditto a small Clydesdale with the same colouring. Leopard spot or very strongly marked blanket spot Appy of that age might float my boat too.

It's great fun musing on it :)

I should have done what I planned to do, but didn't! I was meant to be searching for a wise old hunter type, full of good sense and looking for a quieter life. I won't be disloyal by saying what I got instead - and I love her dearly. But my previous horse, though much younger, was exactly of that type; fun to ride, easy to hold, with a tad of speed but quite happy to muddle along with Mum........
