Which way round?!

It's been a couple of years since I strip cleaned tack and I'm just cleaning my pony's bridle out in the sunshine and I cannot remember which way the reins should be by the bit. Is the buckle (can't remember the name for the hook style!) supposed to be facing the outside or the inside? I just had a quick Google to compare and both are coming up but which is the correct way? It's just a standard English bridle.

If you can fill in my blank moment, I'd appreciate it!

Hook to the inside so the leather is smooth on the outside

If they have billet fittings these face inwards (towards the horse) and if they are buckled onto the bit, they face outwards.
