If you were about to purchase a cob type that's been stabled at night, but will be living out 24/7, what weight rug wud you buy right now? I'm thinking medium but there's 100g and 200g. I'd get a no fill too ready for spring. He's in good condition.

If he hasn't been rugged then I wouldn't be rugging. Unless you have no shelter in the field in which case I may pop on a 100g, certainly no heavier, preferably a little lighter.

Has he been rugged before you get him? If he hasn't been rugged before, then I would say just leave him naked, or put on a sheet if the weather gets nasty. If he was rugged before, then stick a rug on, for a cob type 100g should do just fine unless the weather is exceptionally bad.

All this is assuming he is fairly hairy and not clipped! :)

Thanks, he's not clipped. I don't know if he is rugged in the stable, it's on my list of questions. My last pony had rugs for all occasions so I'm not used to hardy cob types! So, jst a lightweight or 100g if he's been rugged in stable. Thx.

Maybe get one of those all temperature -5 deg freezing up to 22 deg blazing sunshine full neck rugs I see being used, must ask which magic equine shop she got it from......

Horseware rugs will take liners - 100g up to 300g - so one rug either no fill or 100g plus liners as necessary should do.

I think I have one of those actually! Billy is in a 300g as it has been so miserable and freezing here. When you feel under the rug when it was -3 he felt right. When I felt under the rug at 7 he felt right. neither too hot nor too cold.
He sweated under his 100g more at 7*C than he does under the 300g. But the 300 is a much higher quality rug and fill only is half way down rug so must work better that way. Its very odd!
I keep checking and expect him to have sweated up but instead he's perfect. Weird!
