No option for both

hack and school Fergs with schooling whip, jump with a jumping crop (show with a cane :p).

J I normally carry a short crop unless I'm schooling or just messing around.

A long-ish schooling whip with a tickly tail on the end for on the flat and a really short (think about half the length of normal ones) for over a fence. This is simply because my old boy used to look back and run if he could see it and now it's just habit. Don't really bother out hacking unless it's something nappy. I got so used to not having one I usually forget to use it now!

I always use a schooling whip, whether in the school or our hacking. I don't necessarily use it, but when I do it is generally to reinforce my leg aid, which means I can apply it by my leg.

I quite often end up jumping with it at home, more so because the jumping comes as an after thought.

When hacking I carry a short *glittery* :o (so no-one will steal it) leather ended crop, Very rarely have to use it, usually a growl will suffice but occasionally Ted will get in his head that he isn't listening to my leg aids to move and that is too dangerous on roads. Also use it as an extension of my arm when signalling or asking Ted to move in his hindquarters.

Schooling whip comes out when schooling, used as an extension of my arm and never as punishment

short brightly coloured crop for hacking out - always useful for waving down traffic. schooling/off road ect no crop - he works better with without any kind of crop/whip.

I voted none.

With baby horse I am teaching her to move off from my leg and so far haven't needed any back up from a crop.

Have found that older mare is much happier if I don't carry a crop at all and goes off my leg rather nicely most of the time.

However if I have a riding lesson at the local RS it depends which horse I'm riding as to whether I carry a crop or not and if I do then its a short one

the schooling whip for schooling and hacking. for schooling just to make him go forwards so i'm not constantly nagging :) and for hacking i use it to just remind him im there and as its all off road and through a farm yard (kinda) and B's scared of heavy machinery i need to remind him that im there :D
but i hardly use it

A schooling whip at all times.
I use it for closing gates (pushing them with hand end) and I am currently practising being able to bop cars on the roof if they get too close. Still not sure whether to employ this technique or not though :o:p.
Schooling, don't tend to use, just carry it if needed.

Schooling whip for both schooling and hacking.

Good for backing up my leg if necessary and for controlling her big ginger shoulder when it's heading off somewhere it shouldn't be (usually a precursor to her quickly following it with the rest of her body ).

I have a short jockeys racing whip for xc,jumpin at home and hacking,

I use a schooling whip for flat work (when needed) normally have it propped up on fence and stop and get it if needed!)

I take my mark todd black whip for showjumping and a schooling whip for warming up if I need it! Oh and a cane for showing!

I dont usually use my whip but after riding every single horse at a racing yard with one it became second nature to carry one and feel wierd without it now!

I never carry one but still have a few. My fav is one of those ones the jockeys use done in my XC colours. It's was only when my OH said why do you bother carrying a whip when you never use it, that I gave up :)

I always ride with a short whip. I always take a whip out hacking, just incase pony decides to be nappy or naughty! But also use it to make traffic aware that they need to slow down. And jumping I always carry a whip as pony has a tendency to try and run out and generally be a pain!

But its never used to beat her, generally a tap on the shoulder is enough encouragement to ask her to go forward.

I always carry one, feel bare without one. From a hacking point of view it is very usful for waving at naughty dogs who look a bit to interested in the horse or for pushing gates shut, although I don't have to use one on the horse very often it's not something I would ever ride without.

If I am schooling or schooling whilst I hack I use a schooling whip, if just having a relaxing hack or doing fast work or jumping I use a shorter one.

I just carry a crop. I used it for the first time in ages last week and even then it was a little tap. I'd rather carry one and not need it, than need it and not have it.

My youngster won't tolerate a whip at all, he just bucks so I carry nothing.

I would normally use a schooling whip for schooling and hacking, short whip for Show Jumping. I'm using impulsion spurs instead for the youngster!

Short crop.
And just the spurs for schooling :D

Short crop to keep his shoulders in out the traffic, and to give him a smack when he needs it. - He tends to need it quite a bit. I have a rather ignorant and leg dead Highland. *sigh*

None on my gelding, usually. Will sometimes hack with a schooling whip, or XC with a very short jumping whip. On most other horses I carry a schooling whip generally or jumping whip if I was jumping!

Short crop, the same one I've had for over 30 years(!) I don't use it, I just carry it, got into the habit when I was a child and feel weird not having it with me!

None for me. Spider doesn't seem to need one as he goes very well off my leg and I get fed up with switching it from one hand to the other when schooling. We don't even bother with a lunging whip when lunging as he doesn't seem to need it and just gets vastly over enthusiastic with one!

I actually don't think I've ever used my schooling whip - I think it still has the price tag on :)

I always use a schooling whip for day to day riding, it's not often that it's used, I just like having it on me and it's long enough to use without taking my hand away as well as being long enough to beat a dog with if they attached my horses legs (which as happened before) obviously wouldn't use this for dressage or jumping at a competition but for schooling and hacking it's idea and very light weight.

Schooling whip for almost everything. I don't actually need to really use it, but you can't always tell when he's going to be stubborn so it's really just a reinforcement of leg aids.

If I'm specifically having a jump session though I tend towards the short jumping whip. Again, doesn't really need it, but he sometimes gets bored of the same jumps and loses all sense of purpose.
