Hi all
We need to be worming now for Encysted Red Worm, Bots and Tapeworm. I've had discussions with 2 vets and an independent supplier of wormers and have had several different opinions so now totally confused as to the best treatment.
I was going to use Equest Pramox but today a vet cautioned me on its use for Encysted redworms as it can apparently cause a huge die off of the gut, colic and death in 50% of affected cases. Pretty scarey.
One of our horses has been wormed with E Pramox before so he'll be OK but the others I'm not sure of.
One suggestion is to do a Panacur 5 day to get rid of any Redworm then treat with a Praxiquantel based wormer to kill the tapes. The logic being that the more gentle action of the Panacur will give me time to see some symptoms if one of them does have a large red worm burden.
Others I've spoken to say that in practice Equest Pramox is well tolerated and the horses should be OK.
We've been doing worm counts through the year and seeing very low worm burden in the fecal counts.
Anyone have any opinions/what do you do?
Regards
