Which wormer to avoid?

Sorry to bother you all with a question that's been asked before, but I need to worm my horses next week and i seem to remember a couple of threads about a certain wormer which had induced a bad bout of colic.

I can't remember which wormer lots of people said was bad, and i cannot find the threads either, so sorry to bring it up again!

I have had worm counts done and one has a reading of just over 1000 (we were on a livery yard until recently where there was no worming programme) and my other horse has just over 2000 strongyles (and I have recently bought him from a dealer).

I have been recommended to use Panacur 5 day guard and then re-test the dung for worm resistance. But I cannot remember if Panacur 5day was the aggressive wormer that people had bad experiences with. Or was it equest?

Sorry, bit rambly post. I know I have to worm them, but am very nervous about inducing a colic, especially as they both have high worm counts.

any help would be appreciated, thank you. (I am worried)
 
My horse has diarrhoea having had Equest Pramox (sp). He is fine with the Panacur.

I didnt see previous posts about wormers, but I know that the Pramox does not agree with my horse.
 
I would check with you vet and take age and condition of horses into account.

Persoanlly, I would consider taking a gentler approach in using a general but less comprehensive wormer first, which would tackle the currently identified egg laying stronglyes , then tackling the encysted smalll redworms next month.
A second worm count won't show the encysted biurden , so I;d do that next anyway ifnot alreayd done for them this Spring,

Alhthough counts of 1 or 2 thousand are not excessively high.
 
worm with panacur equine guard this will flush them out and then use equest both fine to me every horse has a reaction to any kind of thing not just wormers so dont worry even if your worried get a worming programme of your vet
 
yes but if the horses havent been wormed for a while then maybe its better to be safe then sorry at least you know that panacur will get rid of any types of worms them horses are holding
equest doesnt do all types of worms

Panacur guard is ok but i will never use Pramox or Equimax again after terrible reactions by my cob. The other 3 horses were ok but he was in so much pain( and before i get jumped on for a wormy horse- yes he was riddled when i got him 2 years ago but has been worm counted regularly since then and has no burden)

Equest does not do tapes, but does everything else
Panacur 5 day does not do tapes or bots

So either would cover the high egg count and encysted, you would not need to use both. Both cou;d casue a large evacuation of worms, eggs and encysted. in a horse wiht a significant burden.


Panucur single dose does not work in our area as there is resistance to it. I have known horses not able to tolerate 5 day Panacur dosing
 
It's impossible to say whether a horse will have a reaction based on other people's experiences. Grazing, diet, condition and other medications will all have an influence. Mine have never reacted to any wormer, including Pramox or Panacur, but I've never wormed when they've been on something else. If you are trying a wormer for the first time, all I can suggest is eliminating anything which may be contra-indicative if you can and keep an eye on your horse and his droppings. I wouldn't have any vaccs in the same month, either, as Haffieliesel says.
 
give equest for eycsted and larve 12 weeks later that will bring you to autum then worm with equallan duo that will do tape worms bots and neckworms stomach worms and all red worms round worms and stronglas! poo pick evey day keep your horses separated from each other if you are worried about a wormer a couple of days before and after worming feed some natural yogurt that will put good bacteria in to there tummys. i think any horse can react to a wormer but it is usually rare and any complications usually disapear after 24hrs!
 
Equest Pramox has caused some extreme reactions, it should not be used on neglected or ill horses, those suspected of having a high worm burden, or mares in foal. However you could use Equest then follow with Equitape a week later to minimise the impact.
I would personally hold off on the Equitape (or Pramox) until the autumn worming and just use Equest now, unless you feel you need to worm for everything now.

I have used Pramox on many horses without any incidents - but they were in good health on a regular worming schedule
 
If your horse has a high worm burden then I would ask your vet first and make sure you worm on a day that your vet is about just in case.

Please also be aware that a worm count will not detect all worms such as Enysted emerging small red worms and some tape worms.

It is the active ingredient within the formulation of the wormer which is specific to treating a specific type of worm.

Most brands of wormers have several different wormers in their range so that their brand covers the full spectrum of worms.
 
Ask your vet for advice. They all have the potential to cause problems, but so do all drugs.

I will say though, I have heard of fatalities from the 5 day panacur one (from a very hospital). It's something to do with the time of year it's used . However, the root cause was the level of encysted red worms and colic was triggered in every case. My huskies all disagreed with the canine panacur. For those reasons, I never use the stuff.

I've never come across problems myself with equine wormers and I have worked previously in a few yards. I stick with the ones that last 13 weeks like equimax and equest. I feel that the less you do it the better! If you are worried then I believe the herbal one Verm X is good. No harm trying it first and then use a chemical one, that way it should be a more gradual decline.
