I seem to remember that somebody had said never to use Equest on in foal mares, but I have been advised to do so to get rid of tape worms and encysted worms as she is due to be wormed in the next couple of weeks. I have also been advised that my mare needs to have a a benzolmidazol (spelling?) in her system when she foals, presumably so that the foal carries some in built resistance from her.

Can anyone advise me whether this is right and whether I should use Equest?

Equest will not have any impact on the tapeworms...you are probably thinking of the equest pramox version.
Pramox is not licensed for use on in foal mares...however on veterinary advice I used it on one of my mares a few months ago as she had a tapeworm prob and she is still in foal. The problem with it is that it is still a new drug and as such hasn't been tested rigorously on in foal mares. So basically you would be using it at your own risk....it should be absolutely fine BUT there is a risk the mare would slip the foal.
From a tapeworm point of view I would say your best bet would be to give her a double dose of strongid p OR probably better would be a course of Panacur Guard 5 day wormer as these are safe for use on pregnant mares.
Hope this has been helpful.

Hi

I was advised by my vet to double dose strongid P with the sachets for tape worm. If you google Strongid P there website is very informative.

Equest Pramox is so close to identical to the Australian version 'Equest with Tape' that it makes no difference. Equest with Tape IS licenced for in-foal mares in Oz - and is extensively used on in-foal mares by most of the top studs. Given that Australians are NEARLY as quick to sue as the Yanks, the fact that Equest's makers haven't been bankrupted suggests it IS safe. I am happy to use it on my in-foal mares.

This makes NO sense at all. The important thing is to ensure the mare is wormed regularly throughout her pregnancy AND the day she foals: there is one type of worm that is passed to the foal via the milk!
