Bought my traditional mare last year as 8 but she was actually rising 7 and has continued to grow in her shoulder area. We've started with a MW fixed saddle but have just progressed from an older XW (widest in that range) Monarch to a Kent & Masters Flat Back GP with a XXW silver (again, the widest in the range!!) gullet, but I'm not 100% sure that it suits either of us and I'm not finding it comfortable at all! I can't afford a new, bespoke saddle for her so I'm trying to do right by her with my limited funds. I'm asking what other saddles people are using, or can recommend in an XXW fitting, GP style (we like to pop a few small jumps), for a no-withered, flat-backed barrell!??

Got an XXW Thorowgood cob on Diva. Saddler said if she gets any wider she’ll need a made to measure done by a company who specialise in native saddles.

I’m doing my best to make sure she doesn’t get any wider!

A WOW will go so wide that the gullet plate is almost flat. My wide cob is in a five and they go up to eleven I think. You can get the old heavy ones second hand on eBay.

Mine's not a cob but skinny as I will happily get her she takes a 2XW for the Wintec wide 500 GP.
Really like that saddle and so does she - bit pricey new though so mine was second hand but they seem to crop up often enough 'like new' type of second hand, which is what mine was.

I've got saddle company in xxw - adjustable gullet. Great for flat back drafts. I've also got an old Balance saddle which is so lovely I can't bring myself to sell it even though it's too long for both my horses. That's really wide.

I have an Ideal H&C on my 16hh Welsh cob. It's a lovely saddle which is nice and broad over his big back, and it has four girth straps to help with stability. I tried a Kent and Masters wide saddle during the fitting and although it was lovely at the front the seat was far too small and narrow and moved around.

I have an Andrea Hicks saddle in XXW on a super cob tree and love it, fits him like a glove, had so many problems with slipping saddles before this one, have seen them come up second hand

I have an ideal xxxw at the moment and my mare has such a developed shoulder now that I’m just waiting to get her new ideal saddle - mine will be on their FWB tree, but H&C tree was also an option.
Good luck, as it can be expensive and frustrating to find something that stays put. Your horse will be grateful though.

I have a Strada on an L tree. They are expensive but I have seen second hand ones on ebay and the strada site. The L tree is not so common but you can have another tree replaced with the L (not sure how much this costs). Previous cob had a Barrie Swain Semiflex. I had nothing but trouble with Bates, Kent and masters, Wintec etc and wasted a lot of money on them. I wish I had bought the Strada to start with. Have not used but have heard good things about AH saddles and Ghost treeless.

I have an old Ideal GP Classic that will fit almost all of the wide dales ponies I own.

Also have an Ideal Ramsey which I think was XW but then slightly widened a bit more

Ideal h and c , I have one on my Welsh d and had one on my big cob that I have just sold (still have the saddle though!)I find the fit very generous so an xxw in a normal saddle seems to be a xw in a h and c.
