Which'all in one'feed do you give your chunky monkeys?!Too many to choose from-help!

You are right to make sure he has all his vits and mins - grass and hay and carrots is not enough.

I give my boy safe and sound but only literally a handful but have been looking at Blue Chip Lami Light - gives a full spectrum of vits and mins. I also got him a Dengie Lite Lick to put in his stable.

He also has grass for 12 hours a day and a slice of hay at night just in case you were wondering. He is a 2yo Welsh A.

Because I want to make sure he's having some vits and mins. If I fed pink powder I'd need something to mix it in and enough to hide the powder as he wont eat it otherwise.
My other boy is on pink powder and I did consider this before but was concerned that he'd 'utalise' his food (hay/grass) even more lol!

Cant use a block as he's young and breaks them within days :/

I read about a 'grass' feed too, not sure which but it sounded like it'd be too much.

i had the same problem as you! i needed something to mix supplements in with and i was giving her hard feed byt iv stopped this. Unecessary hard feed comprimises the horses digestive system. I now give mine hi fi which is just chaff basicallly, and i can give her more because it doesnt make her put on weight. It also provideds much needed fibre when theres not much grass.

Thanks all for replies!

Just to clarify, he is fed soaked hay- when taps not frozen and only 3-4 sections overnight. Grazing isn't good but good enough for him obviously!

He is currently on literally a handful of safe and sound and have reduced the lo cal to just under a cup now as reccomended amount for him is 3- i only got to 2 cups for about a week and noticed the weight gain (he's weighed regularly by a tape which shows me if its going up/ down) so have reduced it again.

Im aware I dont want him fat going into summer which is why Im assessing now so I have time to slim him down.

If I fed the reccomended amount of safe + sound he'd be having loads!
Don't want him to go without vits and mins as he's still growing and his hooves have been in better condition since he's been having the lo cal so ideally want a vit/min supplement.

In the summer all he gets is a muzzle lol the grass is definately enough.

I just dont want to waste money on a bag of food (that I know this late in the winter wont be used) that he may not eat.

I might call naf about the pink powder... wary of calling feed companies as I know what they'll say! And I know my boy really only needs some vits/mins!

Wow, loads of advice! I've not read it all so apologies if I'm repeating stuff!
Can you weigh the hay instead of taking sections? Helps you to be more consistent with it so you don't wind up giving more than you intend too.
Ours are both good doers, like yours they are out in the day (muzzled when there is actually any grass!) then in at night with soaked hay. Their feed is about 1/2 scoop of topspec topchop lite with vit and min powder. They turned their noses up at the new 'health food' for a couple of days but now they tuck right in. I mix my own vit and min powder as I don't like to pay over the odds for boxed stuff, but if you would rather not then ours did v well on pink powder (not too well, just healthy iyswim!). My home blend is ordered from here http://www.naturalhorsesupplies.co.uk loads of info and you can pick what you need. Our blend is magnesium, yeasacc, seaweed, microionized linseed and brewers yeast (dosage is on website).

I only started feeding my clydie x when the grass stopped growing and he was getting grumpy. He now has two scoops of Dengie Good Doer morning and night, which he loves. It fills his belly and makes him calm, and then he can go out for 4 hours on dreadful grazing without me needing to hay the field. It is a complete feed, yet very low in calories. In the summer he gets equibites fed by hand, which he thinks are treats, and doesn't realise are vits & mins.

my chunky monkey gets the low cal dengie in spring/autumn and normal dengie in winter. Few carrots and apples and then a general vitimin supplement.

In perfect condition, plenty of energy, stunning coat

My rule would be just stay simple. Its nice having a horse that you don't have to stuff with expensive feeds! Enjoy it :-)
