Whip Ban Review

Today the BHA have announced new changes to the current rules regarding use of the whip in races.

As it stands, until the end of the week, is that if you exceed the number of times you are permitted to strike the horse you are given a ban from riding. With the new rules that number is now where the stewards review the ride given to the horse. If they deem the jockey has used his whip inappropriately then a ban will be issued, same with really excessive use.

This is a step in the right direction! And a long overdue one to boot! With the Cheltenham Festival looming jockeys can now go about their jobs without fear of 2 things - getting a whip ban for a smack or two over the limit, or be banned for "not trying" because they darent use their whips. Of course the jockeys won't now go out and abuse the changes as they CAN still be banned for one strike over the 9 permitted if the stewards deem it unneccessary. They would also more than likely like to keep these newly reformed rules so won't be pushing the boundaries to see how far they can push them. The stewards are strict and won't be gulled over by anyone, not even AP.

Sometimes I do despair of racing - the only sport in the world where you are punished for trying your utmost hardest to win!

Before anyone tries to turn this into an anti-racing thread please don't. We have had enough of them already and I can see more on the horrizon in a few weeks time when The Festival starts.

As a slight side note - We honour our greats in racing, Kauto Star is getting a bar at Kempton Racecourse named after him. We have statues here there and everywhere of famous beasts, Red Rum, Best Mate, Persian Punch to name but a few. What other equestrian sport honours their greats in any way?

Seems like are to return to former rules if they are too severe they get banned and fined , I hope it works out, but remember Ballabriggs, would the jockey have ridden differently under these new rules?
£250K prize money on offer and a lifetime accolade "the jockey who won the GN"
Me, I would cut the prize money, spread it over more races, some sort of series,

The whip ban was a farce and badly thought out, I know its being rectified but the cynic in me thinks its because of the forth coming Cheltenham Festival and high profile jockeys receiving bans and the unwelcome publicity it would attract.

Racing has a lot to be proud of and we should celebrate its stars and I cant wait to see Kauto Star, Big Bucks,Hurricane Fly etc strutting their stuff at the best NH race meeting in the world.

EKW that was some winner you had last Saturday at Haydock and wonder if he is Cheltenham bound.

Good post and I totally agree with you. What so many people forget is how much love/care and attention each horse gets - from the lads and lasses that look after them each day, to the trainer who is getting paid by the owners to keep them healthy and get them fit enough to the racetrack, to the jockeys who have the privilege of riding them in the race. No jockey is going to risk his career to beat, abuse and ruin a horse, just for the sake of one race. Racing is really a labour of love for all those involved in it. Yes there is money to be made, but abused, unhappy horses don't win races. Fit, happy, healthy horses who love their jobs do.

I'm delighted the rules have been amended prior to the festival. It means that it won't be overshadowed by it.

I honestly believe the BHA have pooped their panties over Cheltenham and have had to have a seriously, quick rethink of the rules. If it had been done in summer with Royal Ascot coming up then I think the same thing would be happening.

As to Brindisi Breeze - Thank You very much! Yes he is defo bound for Cheltenham provided that the ground comes up soft enough. The Albert Batlett Novices Hurdle is his aim. He's a funny horse, I lead him up to win at Kelso and to me he looked a mediocre dog, then I took him out again to Newcastle where different tactics were used and he looked like a decent horse. But watching at Haydock on Saturday was a totally different league! He made a good quality field look like total beach donkeys! We all expected him to run well but not turn it into a procession! Bring on Cheltenham! :D :D :D

Sorry, back on topic :D

Yes, I do think it is purely down the Festival being mere weeks away that the rules have changed.

This was one thing that bothered me about the rule, if they were banning over use of the whip then they'd have to get rid of the "non trier" rule as well!

Glad to see they are finally seeing sense!

The Hickstead Derby trophy is a 'model' of Boomerang (and Eddie Macken) coming down the derby bank in honour of their four wins (and Eddie took the old trophy home and wouldn't give it back LOL)

The Foxhunter classes are named after the famous horse.

Can't think of any other examples off the top of my head, but I'm sure there must be more...?

I think the changes have been made entirely with The Festival in mind and with Aintree following closely behind. And I think it’s the right thing as well. Why the BHA and the PJA had to make such a mess of it in the 1st place is anyone’s guess. It doesn’t take a PR genius to work out it was a disaster in the making.
But then the BHA have been making a mess of racing for a while……

My heart and my hopes lie with the old stager Kauto for one more 'hoorah' before he hangs up his racing plates, cementing himself as the finest chaser, post Arkle, we have ever seen.

All I can say is, while the authorities are wallowing in their bureaucracy and wanting to be seen to do the right thing instead of actually doing the right thing, thank god for those magnificent horses who keep NH racing alive :)

.......

If there has been a relaxing of the media driven stupidity of the last few months, then it behoves ALL senior jockeys, to consider their actions, to lead by example (as we all know that they can), and to placate the ignorant, by exemplary riding.

Cheltenham? Bring it on!!

Alec.
