Whip in inside hand?? Or not?

I always thought it was correct to have my whip in my inside hand, so I swap it over when I change the rein.

However, I did a showing class last year (best rider) and got put second because I swapped my whip over

The judge said I could have lost control of the horse in doing so (never mind the fact that I am in absolutely no danger of losing control of my ultra calm, ultra safe ponio

So - is it correct to swap one's whip over or not??
 
Yes I think so, I ran through a dressage test with my instructor and she was shouting at me "why on earth are you swapping your stick?!" So I presume the same rule applies in showing
 
I was under the impression that you swap over when changing reins, as the inside leg is the one most frequently disobeyed and thus requires the presence of the whip.

Saying that, I always carry mine in my outside hand, partly because I always drop it if it's in my left (

) and also because ponio is blind in her right eye and I'm aware of 'defending' her blind side with the stick in some way.
 
It is when schooling but I dont really think it is necessary when showing. Not sure though

I ride with it in my outside hand at the moment, as my pony seems to like the fence a bit to much...

I was told off for changing it full stop - judge said had I been riding the horse that came in 1st place I would have lost control if I'd swapped my stick (because it was bucking and tring to bomb off) - the joys of showing, eh? I'll keep it in the same hand next time I think!
 
When I show I have a cane not a whip, and I don't swap that over. When I'm schooling I always swap my whip over though. It's more correct not to swap a cane over I think, I keep it in the hand that I'm not saluting with.
Not sure if the same rules apply to having a whip in a show class though

I thought it was just me - nearly failed my PC D test for this crime

but I still just hold it in my right hand much less hassle imo.
 
i was told that when showing keep in outside hand as if u need a sneeky smack judge is less likely to notice !!!!!
but when schooling i always have it in the inside

A showing cane is always held in the middle of its length, in the inside hand. Then if you need to change it over its just a matter of taking hold of it with one hand as you release with the other. You don't turn it over as in dressage whip and you don't pull it through as with a short whip.

If you carry a dressage whip in a test then really you should change it as it is there to reinforce the inside leg aid, but you wait until you have established the new rein.
