Hi

I am taking part in a 80cm ODE at my local riding club this weekend with Bailey under the BHS Riding Club “Rules for Official Competitions” 2015 with Area 5 amendments. I am confused about whether you are permitted to ride with spurs and a whip. Can someone please clarify this for me?

In September I did the same competition (70cm class) and the dressage steward said I was allowed spurs and schooling whip but as I was trotting around the outside of the dressage arena waiting for the judge to ring the bell the judge got out of her car and told me I wasn't allowed to use a whip and confiscated it! Better than me getting eliminated so I was grateful!

So in order that I get it right this weekend, does anyone know what the rules are exactly for doing a riding club competition under the BHS rules with Area 5 amendments, save me looking it up?

Many thanks

I'm pretty certain you can use a whip in RC competitions - well I have at least twice now! Maybe the judge wasn't used to doing RC comps, only BE where you aren't allowed one. Would be nice if we could have some consistency across the same discipline :)

I'm not convinced you can have a whip in BRC eventing, you deffo cannot BE. BRC rulebook is online so best to go check

Is it at Solihull?

If so then no.

I did the 70cm a month or so ago and had to drop my schooling stick before the dressage, and so I would imagine they are running under the same rulings for the ODE this weekend

I think that the critical thing here are the Area 5 amendments because you are allowed a whip under the BRC rules. I have no idea what the amendments include.

Yes it is! Glad it wasn't just me then, the stewards need updating on the rules! Are you doing it again this weekend? If you see me say hello, its the horse in the siggy (can't miss him) :)

Yes I am! Venturing into the 80 this time though.

I have no clue how to add photos... I will be the one on the 15.2hh Welsh cross that is likely to be snorting like a dragon and tanking off with me

Currently growing out a hogged coloured mane with a very scruffy looking clip so I don't think we'll be hard to spot!

Have you ridden the 80 before?

Yes, I've done one BE90, and the Intermediate Area 5 horse trials as well as 90cm ODE's at SRC on the horse over the years I've had him, but the horse has had suspensory branch sprain issues, so although all healed beautifully I've been taking things really slowly, its only my 2nd ODE this year and I only did two fun rides this year too! The last one at SRC was the day after we came back from a weeks holiday (20th Sept) so not much time to prepare, that was the 70cm!! I was on at 8am dressage so had to be there for seven at the club, in order to plait up, groom and tack up and warm in! I had to feed the poor sod his brekkie at half six after arriving at the yard for before 6am to load car and hitch up the trailer! Total rush! Don't think he was too impressed either :D

We had a brilliant dressage score, one down in the SJ which is unusual as he normally jumps clear, and clear XC but with huge time faults (again taking it easy with him and trotting to and from fences.) Ended up about twelvth :(

I am hoping the rain holds off, my OH is the Head Groundsman there, he reports the ground is really good at the moment! I have requested an earlyish time as it will be better take off and landings for Bailey if there's not been many horses before him due to his previous injuries but with his IceVibe boots, instant cold packs as a precaution I am sure he will be fine.:)

I will look out for you. Have a really good day. I am in Section F, it would be cool if we were in the same section!:)

I just hope to God I can fit into my body protector with the air jacket over the top, I've put on about 7lbs since arriving back of holiday!

Fab result, well done!!

Ah, I did the same 70cm! We had a fab day out, not our best dressage score but went round clear sj and clear xc. Had some time faults as I too was taking it steady, I'm hoping to be able to speed up a bit this time. Yes, we also had a very early start, we came from Rugby so was on the road by 6am - I'm hoping it's not quite as early this time!

I ended up 6th in my section last time so I was very pleased!

I'm also in Section F, just checked! No 116 so hopefully the ground will still be decent by the time we start.

I've yet to learn my dressage test... Have you had a look at it yet?

Ha I am No. 103! Wow you did great too.

How weird we are both in the same section, both had early starts last time, both did the same class last time, both went round too steady last time, and both doing the same class this time! And neither of us have looked at our test yet lol :)

I am looking at my test now but its the same one as last time so hoping I remember it! I am getting my friend tonight who rides my horse on a Wednesday to go through it so I can watch and pretend to be 'judge'. She prefers riding him in a pelham so it won't be very accurate but its worth a practice. I can ride through it myself tomorrow in the snaffle and hopefully it will 'sink in'.

Not sure when times are being put up, I've tried to access the website but it won't bring up the entry form. Your time will be after mine no doubt judging by your number.

So EXCITED!!!!:D

How strange!!

I tried to have a look for times earlier and apparently they aren't going up until after 4pm tomorrow so we should be able to check then.

Ah if it's the same one as last time it's a nice enough little test, I shall have to have a practice tonight.

I'm really excited now!! But, urghhh I have so much tack to clean.

I'm rather ashamed to admit that it was probably last cleaned for the ODE in September...

My time is mid morning for dressage. According to O/H they are running the 90 first then the 70 and finally the 80. I have an almost two hour gap between dressage and jumping :(

Never mind, I am still looking forward to it and at least I can turn him out for an hour or two before I leave the yard. Just hope the rain stays off a bit.

I can't remember is it £10 start fee? And the test is BE90 test 95 isn't it. Can't access the schedule online, its dissapeared.

Yes it is the BE95 CrazyMare, it's a simple enough test to remember :)

Times aren't the best are they! I've got an hour and a half wait between dressage and sj, then it looks like I'll have to go straight into the xc warm up as not much time between the two.

It was a £10 start fee last time I went so going to assume it will be the same this time.

Are you studding up?

As I definitely haven't, hopefully the ground won't be too bad

I'm not don't have stud holes. I'm only cantering round slowly and trotting over the fences. Glad its 95 as I have started re-learning it. Say hi Crazy Mare if you see me and Sprat!

Yes I think I'll be taking it slowly. I'd just like to get round without killing myself!
