Dear All,

Just as a little follow up to my survey which so many of you kindly completed on Friday;

In the interests of transparency I am actually a horse owner and rider myself. I only hack these days and yes I do carry a whip when I hack for safety reasons.

I am absolutely not against any equestrian sport including racing; I have competed in the past myself at an amateur level.

What interests me is human attitudes within the human/non human relationship and what this says about our culture, psychology, society, traditions and so forth on an individual and cultural level.

On a very personal level (and I’m sure we all probably share this feeling) I am very interested in animal welfare, equine or otherwise, and worry that sometimes we all forget to look at things from the perspective of the animal in question – including myself in that!

Some very interesting results on the survey. Aside from the whip use it has highlighted other issues that a large number of you commented on. The most commonly raised points were:

The use of horses for racing at a young age –some of you suggested an age limit be imposed as per other equine sports.

The attitude of disposability of race-horses was also commented on widely many of you feeling the horses are often considered disposable commodities as someone commented is on par with greyhound racing.

Many of you also commented on the use of the whip as a safety device.

VERY interesting reading I am enormously grateful to all of you have got in touch and thank you to those of you who sent me your emails.

The issues raised and commented on are highly relevant not just to race-horses but to equestrianism in general !

Many thanks again for all your time and effort responding to me I am extremely grateful for all your contributions.
