Whippet owners with cats

I'd love to get a whippet later this year, have experiece of owning lurchers and greyhounds before and can give the time commitment, but am a little worried about my cat who very much rules the roost at the moment.

Does anyone on here own a whippet and a cat? How difficult was it training the whippet not to chase?

My cat has met my mother's dog before and didn't run away, instead he sat on his window sill looking like a huge powder puff

. However the dog did chase him once after which he disappeared outside for 3 hours only returning once the dog had left. How can I introduce a puppy so the cat doesn't leave home? Is this achieveable?

I own a grey x and she's fab with the cats. We got her at 8 weeks and she got a firm growling NO when she went to chase, although it was only ever in fun.

She now has her place at the bottom of the pack with cats firmly on top. they even turf her off the sofa!! lol

Our whippets and lurchers have always been OK with our own cat but have chased visiting cats up telegraph poles. It's our border terriers that we can't stop - we have to watch them with the cat all the time.

Our whippets are all brilliant with cats, my mum raises all her puppies with cats and encourages the cats to whomp the pups a few times in the early days just so they get the idea that cats aren't for chasin! lol

My older dog lived with a cat until about a year ago and they were best best friends, always curled up together, grooming each other.

ROFL - for some reason she was wearing a Bindi that day. I think I found the sticker and was like 'hmmmm, where shall I put this...???' and she just didn't run quick enough LOL

we bring ours up so the cats are boss - rescue whippet sometimes has a chase but its more in play than anything, but the other whippet adores the cats!

I rescue dogs and cats and have a great deal of dogs coming and going from my home on a constant basis, I do have my own whippets and loads of cats and they get on great.......however if I get a rescue whippet in and I am unsure of their background, I always put them in a vary cage when unsupervised or I am out of the house, just to be on the safe side............Even when they show interest in the cats and try to chase it does not take long to discipline them into living along side the cats without any problems, but it always pays to be aware that there is always a possibility esp with a rescue dog to be on the safe side where your cats are concerned.

Thanks, that is why I am thinking that a puppy might be a better idea. Would love to rescue (my parents have a lurcher and a greyhound - both rescue) a dog but also want to security of knowing the full history and ensuring all the training is there from the beginning.
