I really struggle with people calling them these stupid names, my little lurcher is a bedlington whippet - but yes she is a lurcher! A cur, a gypsy dog, a poachers dog. she was bred deliberately by a pest controller to catch rats and rabbits. She is gorgeous, her mum was a pedigree whippet, her dad was a pedigree bedlington. She is not a pedigree.

Would that be a Whidle or a Poopet :)

The really crazy thing is that people are paying £600 a puppy for a mongrel!!!!

LOL,
I had a "whirrier" as they call them Whippet x JRT now I have a Longdog which is 2 sighthounds crossed (Saluki x Whippet) see pics below

Gets boring when you keep having to explain to non lurcher people that the whippet x jrt is a lurcher and all you get back is "I thought Lurchers were big hairy things like the dog in Heartbeat (old series)"!
They seem to think it's a breed rather than a type.

bless, bet she looks lovely and doing a great a job
i can understand why people cross sighthounds for working etc eg whippetx collie
the speed of the whippy and the stamina of a collie esp if they got go out alday in all weather.. not saying some whippys will aswell

but when they add a fashion price tag on to them and advertise them as a stupid name..that just silly

yes some people do think that lurchers are a breed..nope , you can have them as small as jr and as big and hairy like a wolfhound depending on the cross

Unusual markings, she looks lovely!

Alec.

Ets, the second pic, God but lurchers do know how to make themselves comfortable, don't they?!! a.

Lol, convo with freind and her OH over their new choice of dog.

***A: Just chosen our new puppy :)
***B: what is it?
***A: pedigree Labradoodle
ME: thats not a pedigree.
***A: yes it is. she comes from a breeder and everything.
ME: that doesnt make it a pedigree.
***B: Why not?
ME: a pedigree is a dog bred by parents that are the same breed, whose parents were the same breed, whose parents were the same breed times ten reacurring...
***A: okay then know it all. what is a labradoodle?
ME: and overpriced mongrel.
***A: shes NOT a mongrel.
ME: yes she is. she is a lab crossed with a poodle. a mongrel.
***A: no, the lady definitley said she is a pedigree. And she is a kennel club registered breeder so she obviously knows more than you.
ME: The lady is taking you for a right fool. and being KC reg'd means nothing other than you had a pregant dog that had puppies. Anyone can register with KC.
***A: well i think you are wrong.
ME: well i think you shouldnt be getting a dog you know nothing about.

Friend stormed off.. awkward.

The worst thing is they still stand by it now.

Every time we see them i have to ask how 'the pedigree' is.

It is a very strange looking thing, broken coated, sheds like mad (they were promised non shedding) confo is terrible and its nuts, absolutely nuts. £800 they paid for it!!!

I believe it's the second generation onwards that don't shed their coats, so again your friend has been well and truly ripped off!

Let me introduce myself: I am the owner of the whippet poodle litter that seems to have aggravated one or two of you further up this thread!
  • Notice that they're called 'whippet poodles' and not some stupid, made-up name.
  • They absolutely are lurchers and have the same price tag as a quality lurcher.
  • They were inspired by Bedlington / whippet crosses and bred for character and intelligence.
  • The poodle rather than Bedlington choice was made to discourage a certain class of buyer who regard dogs as a disposable pastime; I'm a very responsible breeder who wants good, permanent homes for all pups.
I make it very clear that their coats will shed (even pure poodles shed, but in a different way)
It's heartwarming to pay for decent advertising and discover your advert being slated on the same site.
    That last point was sarcasm

Haha, fair play for defending yourself!
Ironically, now I can see 'Jackadoodlepoodles' over there for £375 :p

Whippet Poodle, I missed this post first time round, do you mind me asking how much you charged and why? You can tell me to bog off :D
For the above, I think that is a bit steep for a cross breed, personally, but of course that is just my opinion.
My large breed male dog from (at least, that's all that fits on the pedigree) five generations of health tested, well qualified dogs, is registered in two countries, chipped, tattoed, DNA'd, cost me £300.
Sure, he ain't perfect but at least everything is traceable.

And also, re the poodles rather than Beds, and the use of the word 'pastime' - are you referring to a possible type of working home?

Also known in the lurcher world as a bullx, on the plus side you can tell her there are specific show classes for bullx lurchers! My 12 week old pressa x lurcher won one in April!

Thank you for your interest, everybody!

All relevant health checks done, of course.
Back up homes for the first year? Certainly not!
Back up homes for the dog's entire life? Yes, absolutely.

My pups are £300: good lurcher prices. It covers my costs and puts a contingency fund in the bank for their mother's old age and possible health problems. I am keen to donate a pup to an assistance dogs programme as I think they'll do well in this field. And I totally agree that pedigree dogs should also be a reasonable price. Saw a labradoodle litter for sale at £1600 the other day. The Australian who first did the cross now refuses to breed them because of the whole 'designer dog' thing and I don't blame him!
I had no idea about all these ridiculous crosses (poodle in particular) and chose the mix for personal reasons. I am a hobby breeder and this is my second and last litter. I feel like I've been caught up in something I want nothing to do with.
I do mean working when I say 'pastimes': I think they'll be good workers and have no objection to it, as long as they're part of the family first. Beddie crosses attract a lot of people who keep their dogs in the shed, work them until they drop then abandon them. Though this cross might filter out a few of those so that I didn't have to.
Feel free to phone me for a chat if you have any more questions. Number's on the ad. :D
