I lost my dear whippet a few weeks back and have been keeping my eyes open for another.

Among her many ailments, she was diagnosed with mitral valve disease at just 7 and was pts at 8. It wasnt the mitral valve disease that killed her; we don't know what killed her, CT scans, MRI scans, a spinal tap and a multitude of bloods could not tell me what was wrong with my dog, but an unknown disease similar to DM took its hold over the course of a year.

I am determined to do it right this time. She was purchased from a car park which gypsys had taken over, was not KC registered and of course her parents will have not had any screening for breed specific health problems.

So ive been looking. Ive seen many, many adverts for dogs who are KC registered. I have reached out to a few who have a brindle male who i think may suit, however the answer is almost always that the parents have had no health tests. A couple have had one parent who has had a heart check but not the other. The one litter i did find with both parents health checked for both eyes and heart had unfortunately for me, already had all the puppies reserved.

I am in Southampton. I saw a suitable litter in Scotland. The quote from a courier to bring a pup down for me was an eye watering £800.

Is it really that uncommon for people to do breed specific health checks before breeding? Or have i just been unlucky in my search so far? Is this whippet specific or is the same through over breeds?

What i also find frustrating is that some of these litters are in excess of £1500!! Which i will grin and bare for a decent puppy whose parents have undergone health checks etc. Im happy to pay it for a litter who have really had no expenses spared.

Im looking on Champdogs, KC and pets4homes. I looked on Gumtree once which was an absolute joke....

On the 4 H&H dogs for sale pages are 2 x sets of whippet pups and 2 x sets of whippet cross pups, but no mention of parent checks but maybe a phone call will give the answers you need.

I've never heard of health checks for whippets such as are routine for, say, labradors or German Shepherds (for hips). They are reasonably healthy little beasts, although I know there are occasional heart problems. I have a rescue whippet and therefore no idea of her breeding. TBH I wouldn't be looking for checks if getting another.

I agree. We have just found 2 youngsters following the loss of our oldies. I've had whippets for over 20 years and don't know of specific checks for them. They do generally seem to be fairly robust as a breed.

Just to add OP be prepared to take your time to find the pup you want. It took me over a year to find the first one and then only a month to find the second. The first came through a rescue organisation at 4 months old, so don't rule out a rescue. The second from a breeder but he had bounced and we got lucky. Neither were silly money either. Good luck.

Same. They have a wide gene pool and lots are still bred for performance so seem to be a healthy breed. I follow a lot of whippet FB groups and dont really see posts about them having inherited diseases.

On the KC website it is "strongly recommended" that heart testing is carried out. I don't know what the situation is with whippets but with my breeds I would expect a decent breeder to have a waiting list for pups rather than any pups available at 8 weeks old.
