pot belly foal update :vet coming out for blood test on friday as worm counts coming back clear
and has been wormed 4 weeks ago when i got him.

today I found a dead worm about 3 inches long today in foal with pot bellys dung.

i have googled and it looks extremely like a whipworm.

anyone got any experiences with this? gave him the other half of the wormer today after finding the worm.
should i keep him seperate from my mare or leave them together?

thanks

Just looked up pictures of whipworms on google as I'd not heard of them before. They seem to look similar to ascarids which horses get.

Here's a link to a H&H thread with a picture of ascarid worms in a dropping. I've only seen one of these worms in real life once, and I could hardly believe it was a worm. It was about 6 inches long, and just looked more like a white twig, or some thick spaghetti!

only 2-3 inches and i read that you can get them in horses (and humans yeuch) the pics i have seen are identical with the transulent head white body and translucent long straggly tail. if anyone has any other idea what it is but my money def going on whipworms . not got pics too put up :(

These are perfectly "normal" in foals.... Nothing to worry about. I think worm counts only show up redworm infestations, not any other worms...

Once they're gone, they're gone I believe.

Still revolting though!

Are you sure that it isn't pinworm? Pinworms don't show up in all worm counts, you need to do a sticky tape test which is round the anus where the eggs are laid. They are notoriously difficult to get rid of and can cause a problem. I suggest you give a sample of the worm to your vet to identify? or get them to do the specific pinworm test.

vet coming out for bloods in morning, found one more dead worm and that makes 2 in all.

i will wait on result and then take it from there, friend looked at worm too and i showed her on the net the whipworm, it really looks like that?

please let it be something simple and treatable as he has not had the best start to life, he is around the 6 months minimum mark and i have had him for a month already. poor wee guy, wish us good results x

aha! i do declare it may well be the pinworm after finding a set of pictures :)
he not scratching his tail but this could possibly be as at the present moment he doesnt have anywhere to scratch as in paddock with full electric round the fencing.

before i got him he had been given a Pramox!, i gave him half an equimax 4 weeks ago and he got the other half 3 days ago. dont understand why he still got pot belly :(
hopefully he will make it :)

The best wormers for pinworm are the old fashioned ones like Panacur and Strongid p. It is thought that the modern 'mectins' are absorbed before they reach the back end of the horse where pinworm live.
Hope that helps

thankyou borderrever,
they are coming out thick and fast now! vet decided to leave him be for a few weeks, check worm count again and take if from there.

if i could manage to teach him how to eat then we will do the panacuar 5 day. just need to entice him bless his wee socks x
