So those of you who have been here a few years may remember my constant mitherings about horseboxes :eek: Well Im here again!
I have just sold my horsebox as it was just too long, I struggled, so Im looking for a compact 7.5t without much luck :( Its early days yet but I have seen a 5.5t??? so what Im asking is:
Is a 5.5t suitable for 1 or 2 decent sized horses, stability wise. I realise I need to find out payload.
Any old faithful 7.5t that anyone knows about coming up for sale soon :)

we have a 6.5 ton that takes two 16.2 quite nicly.... never going to win any speed races...but ALWAYS get us there... pretty stable, feels good on the road
also has 2.4ton payload!!!!!!
its 23ft long...but you wouldnt tell! feels so much smaller, lovly tight turning circle.
 
Thank you, I dont want to waste the sellers time but Im a bit concerned about the power and durability of a smaller vehicle. Its daft really as lots of people carry 1 horse in a 3.5t and this is bigger. I just cant seem to get my head around it. The horse area is pretty much the same size as that on a 7.5t though.
 
we seem to be doing the exact opposite of you! looking for something much bigger! bought a 17.3 wb mare last year..... and she just takes up the whole horse area cos shes soooooooooo long :/ so only she can travel in it easily. we are looking to sell ours, so we can buy something bigger!

our 6.5ton looks like a 'normal' horsebox, but a smaller version in lenght, still got the height and width.

I was looking for an older compact 7.5t, my last one was over 26ft with all the extras but was just too long. I am obsessive about the horse area, it has to be safe and sturdy but the living can be tiny and basic.
 
M reg, turbo diesel, Renault B120, 6.5 ton, twin trophy coach build by pepper harrow 6 years ago, takes 2 horses/3 ponies, 4.2ton unladen. Overnight living with large luton. Rear ramp into large, airy horse area. 3 large windows with bars, 3 small windows and drop down window from horse area to living, so you can see/hear your horses on the journey, roof fan and well padded, removable partitions and rubber floor. Horse wash down shower with pump and water tank, and sink with cold running water, double gas hob with grill. Black out blinds, bench seat, removable table and cupboards plus walk through from cab to living. Internal lockable tack locker (could be converted to toilet) 3 saddle racks/ 3 bridle hooks/ and rug rack. Lights in living, tack locker and horse area. All very bright, so suitable for loading on the cold/dark early mornings. Plated till march 2013 and taxed till September 2012, this has been a super little lorry, getting us around the country, great for pony club as not as big as 7.5 ton, yet still has the payload and but is more manoeuvrable . Will be sadly missed only for sale as have acquired a very big horse, so now require a very big lorry with a lot of horse space.

horse area = 10ft long, 8ft wide, 7'6ft high
living area = 7ft long, 8ft wide, 7'6ft high
outside = 23ft long, 8ft wide, 11'3 high..... i think
