my mare has a very flaky sole on her right front. When I am picking out her hoof its almost pure white and as I say very flaky. She has windgalls on this leg as well which have been there for over a month and this morning when I was picking out her feet I noticed quite a bit of heat. Can anyone tell me what this is and how best to treat it? Her other feet are fine.

I know this might sound bizarre but this particular hoof always feels so much lighter than the others!

Is it white, crumbly and really stinky? Thrush if so. My farrier tells me to use Teramycin spray to dry it out, but have only had to deal with it in my mare a handful of times, gelding gets it alot beacuse he is a dirty wet beastie in his stable.

horses feet naturally exfoliate and this hoof might just do it more than the others. doesnt particularly sound like anything to be worried about.

Sounds like normal exfoliation to me, why just one hoof though - no idea.

Do you regually pick out his feet, I assume you do.

But I knew a horse who was chucked out in a field and left for endless weeks, and I once picked out his feet and they were like this. I thought perhaps anything that was going to fall off couldn't as it was jam packed under the mud ??

I pick her feet out morning and night and they look healthy enough apart from the white flaky sole. There is no odour just as I say very flaky. Farrier is coming on Friday so will see what he thinks. Thanks again :-)
