My recently backed pony has a few white hair on the saddle area, just wondering how long would it take for these hairs to show after damage? There is no real patch but slightly more just in front of withers, she has had them for couple of months she was broken in July time, I'm wondering if the damage was caused while she was being backed, she also was very grabby when bring girthed ( is no longer, since with me), I have been riding her bareback for quite a while, as only just recently found the perfect saddle for us, but now slightly worried in case riding bareback has caused this problem, though I sit on my bum so surely I wouldn't be putting pressure by the withers area as I'm sure that would be slightly painful on my girly bit..

Did you send her away to be backed then? What saddle was used when she was being backed?

If in front of the withers it could have been the saddle cloth that was rubbing. Maybe it wasn't pulled up into the gullet enough?

Bareback riding wouldn't cause damage to area in front of the withers, unless you're sitting on her neck!

I believe a jumping type saddle was used, I did send her away as I felt would be best starting correctly with experienced ppl. Didn't think it was me, also just thought could be rugs?. It has only really become noticeable due to her winter cost coming through.

My young pony has just returned from a short loan to a world renowned dressage yard (which I wont name), with half his withers missing because of a rug rub. It is VERY very nasty. He will have alot of white hair, (if he's lucky). I think his might just have a big black scar. He was only away 2 and a half months, so it doesnt take long for someone to scar them for life, just a bit annoying these were so called "world famous experts".

White hairs generally come from before a coat change. I have known the tip of the coat to be normal coloured but lower down to be white, which can show more exactly when the damage happened.
