Hi all,

YO's horses both have white line disease - one quite badly in all four feet. There seem to be quite a few products out there claiming to solve the problem - just wondered if anyone had any recommendations?

Thanks,

x

Keeping it clean and correct trimming is more important than products in containing wld. Purple Spray is quite good/someone at our yard uses white lightening, any strong antiseptic/antibacterial wash will work.

Milton is the "baby" disinfectant. You can get it from the supermarket in the baby aisle.

Our mare has just gone barefoot and EP found it when she took the shoes off. I'd never noticed and knew nothing about it. Her feet have been trimmed and are being washed daily as per instructions.

I was told not to put anything on her feet other than to clean them really well and scrub them with the disinfectant and a firm/stiff brush.

I still don't really understand WLD, I've read about it previously and "googled" it since but has anyone got practical experience of it. How long did it take to "cure" it?

Thank you (sorry for hijacking your post!)

That's quite alright. Any information that I can pass on is gratefully received! I know what you mean now you've said babies!

Soaking for 10 minutes in a 50% Milton solution will treat mild cases, however if you have severe WLD you need to get the treatment right up the white line and only a gravity soaking boot will do the job effectively.

My EP recommends a Cleantrax soak. One treatment will do two feet, as it is active for 90 minutes and each foot needs 45 minutes. They recommend you first do a dummy run with plain water to avoid the horse kicking the expensive solution across the yard the first time you do it!

You can get Cleantrax, soaking boots and info on how to use it here:

I have had alot of experience with WLD. The only way to totally get rid of it is to resect (remove) the affected hoof wall. Alot of times, this alone is sufficient as treatment. However, it can be hard to remove ALL traces of the bacteria/fungi that causes this disease....so it is recommended to debride the area thoroughly once or twice a week. You can use a wire brush. I also found it useful to apply thrush buster (sorry I haven't lived in the UK for a while and I can't remember if it is sold over there, if it isn't, look for anything that contains methiolate or even iodine)

any topical treatments will usually not treat WLD unless the hoof has been resected. It takes quite a while for the hoof wall to grow back down, but it is worth it, without it there will just be recurring episodes of the white line disease.

have to say the only thing that I have found to work effectively and quickly is Hydrogen Peroxide.

My old loan mare had it and I poured some of it in, let it "fizzle" and then washed it out. gone within a week! but she wasnt very bad, had a mild case.

dont know if it is still used however, we are quite a traditional yard

all i know is that we use it as it works
