What causes this, and how "easy" is it to cure?

I think Horlicks has this, and she is constantly loosing shoes. Obviously being a RS horse, she can't really have her shoes removed and taken off lessons... not only because she won't be "earning her keep" but she gets very foot sore.

Is there a hoof treatment that can be applied to help solve the problem?

Keratex (think thats the correct spelling) Nail Hole Disinfectant will do the trick :) its about £11 a bottle if i remember correctly :)

mine have had this in the past and my farrier told me to use cheap thin bleach or hydrogen peroxide. i went done the peroxide route and it worked very fast.you just drizzle it along the nail holes. much cheaper than buying the hoof stuff.i was a bit shocked when my farrier said bleach but he assured me it would work as it kills the bacteria that causes the problem. you only need to use small amount. has your farrier told you that your horse has this problem. does your horses hooves smell!!!
good luck

Horlicks belongs to the Riding School, so I haven't actually spoken to the Farrier, but I know she did have it last year.
Her feet do smell ATM, so I gave them a scrub out last night when I went up to see her. She also keeps loosing shoes, which I think it down to her rubbish feet.
