My mare is (supposed to be) a very white grey, but for anyone who has a white grey they'll know that white numnahs just look like you haven't cleaned your horse :(

I was thinking a dressage pad with some kind of piping to distinguish between horse and pad would be nice, maybe black. Can anyone recommend any nice pads that they use for dressage with their greys?

We use a black numnah for dressage on our grey pony :)

Are you permitted to do that? I haven't seen a soul using a numnah that wasn't white on their horse at dressage. I know the rule says 'muted colours' so really it shouldn't be an issue, but would a judge take offence?

I considered just using a saddle shaped numnah but I really don't like them !

As long as it is within the rules and your horse is turned out well in respect for the judge I don't see why they will feel offended if you use a simple black square, dark grey could also look very smart.

I'm pretty sure there is nowhere in the rules that says it has to be white, its just the done thing to do that. I never put white on my grey! I've always worn grey or black numnahs. The Lemieux grey is lovely :)

I have used brown and black saddlepads for dressage, both unaffiliated dressage and BE. Especially when wearing tweed white can look a bit funny, I think it looks just as smart with black or brown.

Thanks all. I might try a grey one :)

I still think I would like a white one for if I ever happen to qualify for Nationals! Would anyone be able to recommend a nice one with black piping?

The BD rules say the numnah/saddlepad must be white/cream or a conservative dark colour. I hate white on mine, as she is a mainly white piebald and a white numnah just makes her look dirty, no matter how clean she is! I have a black saddle and use a black numnah with some white piping about an inch in. Sorry OP, no idea where it's from as I bought it second hand.

But the number of people who see me tacking up and tell me I MUST change my numnah.....really experienced people too, who clearly haven't read the rules recently. I do use white when I want to be really smart, but for local competitions it's black and no judge or steward has ever pulled me up over it.

I forgot my white saddlecloth at last dressage comp, so used his everyday black square. I agree that most go for white, we were the only one in black, but we won so the judge can't have been too concerned :)

I have a cream saddlecloth, it actually looks fairly white, until you hold it up to something white. It makes a grey (white) horse look cleaner lol. Ours is spotted , but the base is white, and the cream colour looks nice. It's a HKM one I think.

Yes you can use anything plain and subtle, i.e. brown, grey, cream, black.. it's just the 'done' thing to wear white

My horse is dun and my husband hates white saddlecloths so I'm only allowed to use chocolate brown (have choc brown tack) or light tan - both come from Premier Equine and are very smart. The light tan is especially cute - have used both at affiliated.

Kali's dressage square was the Lemieux grey - it looked extremely smart. He wore the Lemeiux navy for SJing.

As he was always immaculately turned out, we never had a judge take offense at the colour of his numnah.

I've just bought a white white grey and was planning on using white with a navy binding to match my jacket/hat

I just spoke to my local Dressage tack shop and they have a beautiful white saddle pad with navy piping, going to try this as I too am decked out in navy!

Bought a stunning White Schockemohle (sp?) saddle pad with thick navy piping, it will match my hat and jacket so quite pleased!

I've sent my white saddlecloth off to have coloured piping added, as I decided I didn't like the white with white edging!! I also have a cream one with navy & gold edging that I use for affiliated dressage comps, which I think looks smart on my bay. Nobody has ever commented!
